3D clothing unequipping on avatar

If you try to wear a sweater over a t-shirt or shirt it will unequip them instead, the same applies when trying to wear pants over shorts or when loading outfits.

Expected behavior

Just a few days ago I was able to combine shorts with pants and sweaters with shirts. Not being able to do that really limits our customization options!

Thank you for the report. We have assigned to our team for review.

Hey, thanks for the report and including the video!

The behavior displayed in the video is intended layered clothing behavior. For layered clothing, we support five slots that clothing can be assigned to: Tops, Outerwear, Bottoms, Left Shoes, and Right Shoes. These slots are indicated in the web editor in the second navigation layer, for example the “Clothing > Bottoms > Pants” category is in the Bottoms slot. You can also see the slots in customize page of the Roblox app.

If you want to wear both a shirt and a sweater at the same time, be sure to find a shirt that fits in the Top slot and a sweater that fits in the Outerwear slot. If you want to wear both shorts and pants at the same time, you can try mixing Shorts with Classic Pants.

If you do see two items in different slots unequipping each other, that would be a bug, and in that case please post the item links!

Why did the clothing types merge into fewer categories? This not only breaks existing outfits but also limits the way we can combine most layered accessories. If this pattern of decisions keep up then everyone will have the same or identical avatars, there will be no room for creativity.

Hey! I see how this looks like something has changed even though we haven’t made any changes. Layered clothing has always worked this way: each item lives in one slot (Tops, Outerwear, Bottoms, Left Shoe, Right Shoe), and if two items share a slot, equipping one replaces the other. The unexpected behavior likely comes from UGC items that were created to look like shoes but actually live in the Bottoms slot. An item’s asset type is defined by the UGC creator, and it may not always fit what it visually looks like. For example, the shoes that you equipped in your video were marked as the “pants” asset type, which means they fit in the bottoms slot and will remove any other bottoms you’re wearing, such as the shorts you had on.
