There’s plenty of great threads in the Lounge section that I enjoy reading. A lot of these are things relating to Roblox that do not necessarily fall under the category of “Development Discussion”.
However, there is another category of threads which I have little interest in. These are things which are completely off topic and have nothing to do with Roblox.
Discourse allows me to filter out the Lounge subforum as a whole, but does not allow me to differentiate between the two types of threads I described above.
I propose a new subforum called “Roblox Discussion” (or something similar) in which we can make threads which relate to Roblox but do not fit in any of the other categories.
Imo the lounge should be renamed roblox discussion. I see no reason for the dev forums to be hosting memes and other things that are completely off topic / provide no value. That stuff should stay on the roblox forums, or Twitter.
Don’t take away my home of shitposting no but I do have some interesting threads/topics I like to share in the lounge that aren’t always targeted at ROBLOX discussion. It’s always helpful to have an area for ‘all things’ really and it’s how (at least myself) been able to socialise and make friends within the RBX Dev community more easily.
Isn’t there a discord server? The dev forums aren’t a chat app. I don’t see any socializing and making friends, I just see people posting a bunch of threads that are either off topic or nonsense.
Don’t get me wrong the discord server is totally helpful for that also but I don’t normally have the time to go on and sift through everything and not everyone really participates in the chat. On the forum the thread can be viewed any time of day, I like to have my regular polls (you can find them all here) and as long as we stay away from political topics and still apply a layer of common sense, I don’t see an issue with it.
So here on the Developer Forum, we try to refer to things as “Categories” and “Subcategories”. An example of a category would be “Development Discussion” while a subcategory example would be “Collaboration”.
I’m not sure how we’d feel about adding an entire new category for this but perhaps we could consider splitting the Lounge category into two subcategories, those being:
Off-Topic
Roblox Discussion
This is just my two cents on this, what do you think to this idea?
I think we could use an additional one: forum games. So the structure would be:
Lounge
Roblox Discussion
Forum Games
Off-Topic
Something like “Create a story where the words are ROBLOX items” would fit in Roblox Discussion, although this is the kind of discussion users requesting Roblox Discussion wouldn’t want to see. Also, forum games attract a flood of posts, and usually end up being hundreds long. Due to their post volume, they’re constantly triggering “you have unread posts”, so I end up muting them all. I wouldn’t want them even in Off Topic because I’d like to read it.
Separating forum games off into their own category allows users to mute it so they no longer get notifications, but can still manually browse to the category and see the posts without having to mute the individual topics where they can’t be viewed at all.
I think we should also be more clear with our rules. “Off topic. Intelligent. Respectful” cover the intent broadly, but I think we need to get more specific. Namely:
“All topics should be useful to the community” (no threads such as “1+1 = 2”, linking random clickbait news articles, etc)
“Barring forum games, all topics should encourage constructive discussion” (no topics correcting grammar, bloxcity, etc)
While you’re not wrong, it’s hard to label things objectively as constructive or non-constructive. I think this proposal would at least be a good start.
The lounge should be split up into roblox discussion for roblox related posts, off topic for other non-roblox related posts, like for example, the Nintendo Direct, and Forum Games, like ‘RBXDev in 4 words’
