While I don’t mind parts being entirely rectangular and edgy 99% of the time, there’s still that 1% where it’s not wanted nor ideal to have straight and sharp edges.
The use case here is making parts look like they belong in R6 and R15 without using (uploaded) meshes or naming them strangely. I’d like to have a way to do that using a property in either BasePart or BevelMesh, preferably in BasePart so as to support wedges.
######If I recall, BevelMesh used to have a property called Bevel that was removed sometime in the past, and all parts used to have bevels if they didn’t have a block mesh in them. (And this, from 2011, seems to support that remembrance.)
the problem of that it’s too expensive to draw them is actually nonsense ; cause of unions and mesh parts which already allow to more or less make every part beveled !
So if someone wants a part to be beveled then they just should add a new part type called Bevelpart
and or a special bevel mesh ., and to reduce rendering lag they just should lower the dammit bevel poly count.
Keep in mind that the post was made back in 2013. Computers at the time weren’t as powerful as they are now, and a lot of ROBLOX players don’t have high-end or even up-to-date machines. It’s actually surprising to see what kind of performance we used to see as “normal” as little as 3 years ago.
And then, yeah, it’s just a question of aesthetics. When bevels were an official feature, I remember using parts with BlockMeshes in them specifically to get rid of the bevels on most of my builds.
Ideally, I’d like to see bevels return as a new option on the SpecialMesh instance. They are quite useful for things such as brick walls and I liked being able to resize the parts without having to separate them, move a bunch of NegativeParts according to the new size and then union them again. But there’s a ton of workarounds to bevels not being a thing at the moment that this is probably not that high of a priority right now.
This would be great to have, since if developers want to have bevels, they have to sacrifice textures with SpecialMeshes, or have welds ruined with MeshParts. I am currently working on an old Roblox recreation, and if we had a property on parts to enable them, it could improve games, old Roblox or not, since we wouldn’t need to bevel them in Blender or something similar.
