Addressing Botted Followers, Favorites, and Stats Across the Platform!

Artificial metric manipulation such as botting followers, favorite counts, group member counts, and Marketplace/catalog items is a growing concern that directly affects legitimate creators across the platform.

When bad actors inflate engagement artificially, it creates a few major issues:

  • Distorted Algorithm Discovery: Developers building organic, authentic engagement get pushed down by inflated stats.

  • Consumer Misdirection: Players searching for quality experiences or UGC items end up in low-quality or scam games boasting fake popularity.

  • Skewed Analytics: It makes market research and competitor analysis unreliable for creators studying platform trends.

Current Community Challenges

While standard reporting procedures exist (such as the official Roblox Content Moderation Guide and Creator Safety Tools), developers often face friction during the process:

1. Delayed Enforcement: Processing reports often takes time, leaving flagged experiences or items active while gaining traction.

2. Minimal Status Visibility: Once a report is submitted, there is no system to track whether an investigation is ongoing or resolved.

As highlighted in community discussions surrounding botting issues, metric inflation remains an ongoing point of confusion for creators and players alike.

Here is an example of the botted metrics issue, with specific usernames anonymized for compliance:

Discussion Questions

I’d love to hear how other developers feel about this topic:

  1. How often do you notice metric manipulation affecting your specific niche or genre?

  2. What automated safeguards or detection systems could Roblox implement to catch botting before it inflates public stats?

  3. What features would you like to see added to improve visibility on moderation reports?

Community Poll

How often do you encounter botted metrics affecting discovery in your niche?

  • Frequently (It directly impacts my games/items)
  • Occasionally (I see it happening around the platform)
  • Rarely / Never
  • I only notice it on high-profile games or UGC items

Conceptual Example (Technical Context)

Below is a basic example showing how game scripts interact with external HTTP web APIs to send payload requests, demonstrating why server-side rate limits on external endpoints are critical:

local HttpService = game:GetService("HttpService")

local function sendMetricPayload(targetId, apiEndpoint)

    local payload = HttpService:JSONEncode({

        targetId = targetId,

        requestType = "metric_sync"

    })

    pcall(function()

        HttpService:PostAsync(apiEndpoint, payload, Enum.HttpContentType.ApplicationJson)

    end)

end

That makes sense for personal accounts, and it is solid that you have a script banning them on join for your game. Where it gets tricky is when bad actors use thousands of bots to boost UGC items, group counts, or game favorites to trick the algorithm and push real creators down. Dealing with them in-game is one thing, but on the platform side it gets pretty annoying fast.

Glad to hear it hasn’t messed with your stuff too much, though.

Also What kind of checks are you running to detect them on join? Are you checking account age, or looking at specific player HTTP requests? Always curious to hear how other devs handle it!

lowkey i gotta gatekeep my methods cause i dont want anyone to bypass them but account age checks are out of question because the bot accounts are over 2 years old

heres a thread i made about them already in development discussion

Totally get keeping security logic private so bot owners don’t adapt.
