Allow 18+ ID Verified Users To Access Unrated Experiences

Due to the new Roblox update, many experiences (especially classics) are now forever locked because of this brand new update! I’d like for the ability for 18+ ID Verified users to be able to access these games! I believe this is a fair implementation and change, so that way the games aren’t completely inaccessible and lost forever! Adult users shouldn’t be barred access from games with an unknown rating.

Aside from the fact this is a common sense addition (if an unrated game is so unsafe that even 17+ verified users can’t play it, why was it allowed on the platform to begin with?) this would probably encourage more users to ID verify (something that Roblox would obviously want people to be doing)

+1 to this, there are so many games that are now completely restricted. I’m an adult, I shouldn’t have to be walled off from accessing a game because the maturity rating is “Unknown”.

This just makes sense, slight nitpick… it should be 18+, not 17+ since that’s what Mature’s age limit is at now.

This is going by ESRB ratings, AO (Adult Only) ratings aren’t on Roblox, 17+ (Mature) is the highest and I believe it’s appropriate as anything with an AO rating would most likely be pornography, which shouldn’t/wouldn’t be on Roblox in the first place!

Mature was recently moved to an 18+ age rating!
Also, according to Wikipedia only one game with an AO rating lacks sexual content… it’s gambling.

Still, whether it’s 17+ or 18+… the games shouldn’t be completely unplayable!

Good find, I will change it to 18+ then!

This is a no-brainer, I have yet to see someone in charge properly acknowledge this bare-minimum compromise

From what I could tell they ignored all questions regarding this suggestion on the original thread or referred to vague statements & other responses which answer jack

This isn’t quite true, there’s an internal team manually reviewing games with inactive developers with over 1000 visits. This is how games like Eg! have received a rating after the 30th even though the developer has unfortunately passed away.

(But yes I completely agree that unrated games should just be 18+ like who thought this was a good idea

What An Unbelievable Waste Of Time And Resources Lol Just Make It 18+

It would’ve been a great supplementation. Let people 18+ keep playing these games, but have a team go through as many as possible to properly rate them. That would’ve been way better than “These games are completely unplayable until we get to them, and we have millions of games to go through so you better be patient!”

Roblox already said that they aren’t going to do this, unfortunately.

Roblox is partnering with the IARC (International Age Rating Coalition), which requires that all experiences must be rated. They are eventually going to allow users to request a rating on an experience if the creator is no longer active, but who knows how long that will take.

I’ve read these replies, and I still don’t see where they explicitly say no to this? It’s never really actually addressed in the replies you’ve shown, just them providing work-arounds. Besides even if they are partnering with the IARC that requires experiences to be rated, Roblox could just get around this by auto-forcing all unrated experiences to the 18+ Restricted Maturity rating anyway, so I don’t see why this cannot be implemented regardless!

Both replies state that IARC requires ratings on all experiences that users can access.

The second reply also states that they want to “empower players and parents to make informed decisions about content” which could be interpreted as not wanting a game to have an incorrect 18+ label if it doesn’t actually contain any “Restricted” content.

Not to say I disagree with this request though, because I literally brought this up in my question.

Can’t this just be changed by the creator of the experience then? If the creator is inactive, then can’t you just submit it to the team for a more accurate rating? I still think just having the default be ranked to Restricted would be better off, as the experience has technically been rated, just maybe not accurately.

Honestly I see both sides here. I get why Roblox wants to protect younger players, but it feels unfair that verified adults get treated the same way. If someone’s gone through ID verification and is 18+, they should at least have the choice to access these unrated games. Otherwise, a lot of Roblox history just gets locked away for no reason. An opt-in system for verified adults sounds like the fairest balance.

I don’t think it makes much sense to restrict the Experiences access even for adults. If the goal is for Maturity labels to provide accurate assessments, it’s not like Roblox cannot put some sort of banner or create an alternative label to the Maturity label like they already have (Unknown Rating) to tell possible parents that the Experience is inaccessible to the user not having the right access (Restricted 18+).

Adults don’t need to have informed decisions because there is no risk there. Like, we’re Adults. If a parent sees that an Experience is locked to 18+ because there is no way to fully confirm the Experience contents because the Developer didn’t fill out the Questionnaire, there should be no issue there. Just simply avoid the Experience.

In Roblox’s own words, they ask people filling the Questionnaire to fill it out to the most extreme case a user could experience in said Experience. If that’s their ideology, then the extreme case here is that we cannot confirm the Experience contents, and therefore it’s temporarily locked behind 18+ until the Developer states otherwise.

I get the main argument is that we’ve “partnered with IARC” but they’d already be giving as much of an accurate label as they can without compromising several titles. As for their vision to “empower informed options” or whatever, they would be doing that by following their previous ideology already (and like I said before, they could totally add a banner or some sort of warning next to the Maturity label)

I know it’ll never happen, but there is better ways to approach this than just locking everything down because it’s easier.

it being 18+ is absolutely ridiculous. They shouldn’t be restricted at all without giving your ID to roblox

What do you suggest then? I’m always open to including alternate solutions!

a good way to preserve them would be to uncopylock them if they were public at one point and haven’t been updated in 4+ years
