Currently, users under 13 are restricted from using any freeform content features such as drawing or painting, even when the content is strictly client-sided and not visible to other players.
I’d like to request reconsideration of this restriction. Since this content is never shared, it presents no safety risk or moderation concern. It limits creative experiences for younger users, when being creative is so important!
Developers should still be required to flag the content as client-sided to meet compliance, but lifting the ban on local drawing would open up more creative and engaging gameplay for younger players without compromising safety.
Please consider allowing U13s to interact with secure, local-only creative tools! It would make roleplaying at schools/daycares a lot more fun and relevant to children! Thank you
A part of the client sided drawing, as you say, is making
Is that not client-sided drawing being replicated to the server (and thus other player clients) so that everyone in the roleplay can see what’s happening?
If I write 2+2 on the board, I think it’s obvious we want everyone to see that I’m not too knowledgeable on how Roblox in the engine is stopping this, but I say don’t change how it works.
The issue is moderation before it reaches the players. Because of that, I’d argue to keep this restriction.
In a perfect world, I’d love this allowing creativity without the negativity it means. We can’t be naive in safety reasons like this though. Safety > “Creativity”
Correct me if I am wrong, but I believe they were trying to say that being able to draw, even if other users cannot see what you’re drawing, would create a more immersive game. The actual drawing itself would remain fully client sided and never be shared.
I am not referring to 3D asset creations, I am referring to users drawing or painting in 2D.
2D paintings are not allowed, even if they are not shown to other users. I feel being able to draw in private should be allowed within Roblox, as this does not cause harm or affect other players.
Hope this makes more sense, sorry for the confusion!!
This is true, but there is currently no way of being able to tell whether a user is eligible to view free form content, so you either have to make everything replicate to everyone and age restrict your game or make nothing replicate. My game is completely focused on its drawing system, so making it where nobody can view anyone else’s drawings would not be ideal and would ruin the fun for everyone.
The only solution that makes sense is to restrict replication only for users who shouldn’t be able to view them. We really need a value in the GetPolicyInfoForPlayerAsync method of seeing if someone can view freeform content.
While good intentioned, I could see this going wrong if someone were to draw something inappropriate and present it as being visible to other players on social media to try and falsify bad PR for Roblox.
Yeah this is just the unfortunate reality of this kind of stuff. I do understand the request of allowing it to be used clientside though. The issue however arises from the fact that Roblox itself couldn’t really limit how you use this feature? As in how do they even detect if clientside editable images or other content are being replicated between the client to the server and then to other clients? It’s just better to keep this off.
But it is allowed client-side. If drawings are replicated to other clients then you need to specify that your game includes free-form user creation in its content maturity so that it will be locked to 13+ users.
No i think replicating that should not be allowed.
Imagine some timmy being told to “write mom’s credit card number”.
Only local usage should be allowed for safety.
This feature would be highly appreciated for more complex games with dynamic image/mesh generation. However, I don’t see this as feasible without adding a loophole for bad content.
Yeah I thought this too, however this is incorrect. Our game contained 2D art that was not shown to other people, and we were told to remove it, even after clarifying with DevRel. Any content that is freeform, whether it is shown to other users or not, is not allowed to under 13s.
To me, what you said makes perfect sense but unfortunately is not the case.
which is actually hella annoying now that i think about it.
You can’t even make this goofy ahh games from google play where you draw for yourself.
Imagine waiting to turn 13 just to draw
It is weird!! I completely agree. Just wish it worked the way you said, that’s what my post is asking for. Makes no sense that it works the way it does imo hahaha
