atm there doesn’t seem to be any proper way for an experience to know whether a player is male or female.
something as simple as:
Player.Gender
or
Player:GetGender()
would be useful for a lot of small personalization focused things.
for example could be used for making unique in-game user prefixes like QUEEN for females & KING for males
it also helps developers avoid sexualizing players experience in games like HUG TROLL tower etc making custom boys avatars and girls avatars
if exposing the actual account gender is a privacy concern, this could instead be an optional avatar/presentation preference specifically made for experiences to use.
nowadays gender is a subtle topic
way better to avoid them to prevent potential complains
ask players to choose an avatar and you are safe
you can even lock some shiny ones behind purchase
Yeah, as @af_2048 said, don’t fall into that sh*thole.
Let the players choose anything they want, use paywalls if you must. But don’t divide them into a tri state binary, it apparently isn’t as simple as it was 10 years ago.
I’d rather every game ask this question rather than have personal information disclosed to any developer without my consent so that they can do god knows what with it.
Access to this data is such a narrow and niche that there is no reason to add it by roblox. If you really need to know, just ask the user via prompt as suggested previously in thread. Allowing developers to access to this data would just open flood gates for sexual harassment and singling.
If you are making game, which evolves around players gender, I suggest rethinking the game design/idea. Ethically thinking, developers should threat and make games equal, regardless of gender.
Only reason Roblox even asks this data upon sign up (you can also edit it in settings), is for analytics and upon sign up, assigning the default avatar to that gender.
Aside from privacy / technicalities, ask yourself first if you really need/want to make decisions for players based on their gender. Gender says nothing about preferences, so you’d be making choices on a stereotype pretty quickly.
Instead of asking “what is your gender” to decide a starter avatar, show eg 3 images of starter avatars and let the player pick their preferred one.
Instead of deciding for players whether they’re tagged “King”, “Queen” or whatever, give players agency to choose their own preferred tag.
Roblox wont add it because it would allow malicious data harvesting and would introduce more safety requirements
That the real answer
Move on
What’s next?
API for reciving birthdate, location and passport information?
Nahh
“assigning the default avatar to that gender” is exactly why i consider this a good thing for devs who prefer to avoid players who sexualize their avatars
Just give players a way to choose from a list of pre-made avatars then, problem solved without exposing personal data to game developers without user consent. Roblox has never just provided developers with this kind of information and for good reason.
