As a Roblox player, it is currently too hard to create an avatar that can work properly across all experiences.
As you know, some experiences have limitations on what avatars are supported. For instance, a game might only allow R15 or only R6. In this scenario, if a player joins an R6-only game with an R15 avatar, their avatar might look mangled and inaccurate to the player’s expectations of how they should look.
There is also the case of experiences that encourage specific avatars. For instance, roleplay games might want you to dress up as the job you have in the experience, and some people’s go-to avatars might not fit the aesthetic of a specific experience.
If players are allowed to set an avatar for individual experiences, it would greatly improve the UX of almost every experience that sets limitations on avatars and even experiences whose communities encourage a specific kind of avatar.
P.S. If this is the wrong category for this kind of feature, let me know—I'm willing to let it be moved to the proper category.
I don’t think that this will happen as it is too specific and because R6 is deprecated. However, it would be judicious to ask for a way to set an avatar for specific games, as it’ll cover broader use-cases, yours included.
I’ve updated it to be clearer and only use R15/R6 as an example. Which is what I meant, but I was drinking coffee when I wrote this and I am now fully awake.
Edit: ignore this, I misunderstood the feature request
Summary
Developers having restrictions is usually there for a reason, whether gameplay or aesthetic or otherwise.
Maybe if this suggests an R6 avatar or customizing before entering or a notes on the game details page what it forces you into. But letting players choose to override what devs set outright is bad imo. Developer intent over player preference IG is my take.
For my game I have a custom character, so nobody gets their Roblox avatar. That’s not me being mean, it’s a game about being a flying pig, a quadruped, not a person.
I’d hope this feature, if invasive, wouldn’t impact those kind of games. The custom character games.
Not really the point—although it is good to clarify here. I know I for one change my avatar depending on the game and many others do too. The games that have custom characters would not be affected by something like this. It’s the same as making avatars, naming them after the game, and then using it when you play that game.
Thanks for sharing this idea! We appreciate the detailed breakdown of how per-experience avatars would improve the transition between different gameplay styles, like roleplay vs. competitive play.
This is something we have considered—we want to ensure that if we move in this direction, it’s done in an intuitive way that also respects the “platform avatar” as the user’s core identity.
While not exactly a per-experience preset, we recently released the in-experience avatar switcher, which helps with some of the friction you mentioned by allowing players to swap outfits without leaving the experience. You can read more about that here: In-Experience Avatar Switcher.
Thanks again for the suggestion; it’s definitely something we’ll keep thinking about as we look at the future of avatar customizability.
