As a Roblox developer, it is currently impossible to create true mirrors that accurately reflect a scene.
While it is possible to invert CFrames in real-world space, it is complex to do so, and it does not invert the object itself, as there is no way to flip rendered meshes or objects.
Or is it?
If you have ever turned on your webcam for Roblox, you may have noticed the little window in the corner.
My hair appears to be flipped, my shoulder accessory is on the other side, and even the buttons on my shirt are flipped.
It appears that Roblox can already mirror things through a viewport frame! It’s under a property called “IsMirrored”. However, it is locked, which means it can only be used by the CoreGui.
I think this feature is only used for the webcam. Nothing else.
Think of the many possibilities we could have if we were allowed to toggle this simple boolean value!
We would be able to make mirrors much more easily if paired with EgoMoose’s viewport frame portals, and for the first time, objects would truly appear mirrored. We could also create mirrored mini-cams, similar to Roblox’s webcam window, to assist with facial tracking.
If Roblox is able to address this issue, it would improve my development experience because it would make mirroring things so much easier and better visually.
Bump- This would be incredibly useful for faked planar reflections, it would mean that I don’t have to manually mirror everything which already barely works.
it genuinely works as reflections, even with a bit of hacking, it would work so much better compared to having to mirror everything manually which is slow and doesnt work on meshes.
They lock things because they’re uncertain whether it is stable for use in-game by developers, if they intended to use it only for internal purposes. To prevent issues like soft-locking users in the UI or from the game crashing. Someone has to manually unlock it.
yeah but I’m assuming that the reason why the previous user stated that roblox blocks everything useful is because it’s well.. tested, and it works well. Plus, it’s not really doing anything major, just flipping the image
My example was more about the other methods, like creating a Qt Widget in Studio as Plugin that could trap the user from closing studio, etc. these also have Roblox Security.
Why is it that graphics-related feature request are always ignored… first ResampleMode for Textures, Decals, Materials, SurfaceAppearences, etc. then a Visibility boolean property for models… then a boolean property to force Parts to render regardless of distance… then discrete graphics options… now this? Jeez, what the hell are they doing man
