Another Possibly Awful Game Idea

Once again I have had a new game idea, and once again I don’t know if it would be awful to play.

The basic idea is that it would try to simulate being in a dream. The game would be pretty realistic, but sometimes there’s just something that’s not supposed to be there. Nothing too crazy, just a little weird. It would also have the blur turned on and you would move slowly.

The goal of the game would be to find a way to wake up. I haven’t totally figured that out yet, but maybe you click on things that seem out of place and if you find enough you’ll realize you’re dreaming, and then be able to fly around or something for a short period of time.

If this sounds like an okay idea I’d like to hear some other people’s experiences in dreams because I think a lot of what my idea is based on is my own dreams. I think the moving slowly is pretty universal but other stuff could just be me

Current ideas for dream stuff
  • Having trouble talking (chatting in-game)
  • Randomly seeing people you know where they shouldn’t be (take avatars from friends list?)
  • Quickly moving from one place to another completely unrelated one
  • Falling asleep in the dream
  • Avatar’s clothing changes sometimes
  • Game switches between realistic and cartoony
  • Sense of urgency (i.e, you’re in a mall and it’s closing, so you have to leave as fast as you can.The mall has no exits)
Concept Pictures

Thank you for all feedback on my idea! I know this is the second one I’ve posted but I want to know what people think of my ideas before I start to put too much time into them.

I actually think this has potential, not a bad idea either.

I doubt a game like this ever going on the front page however, it sounds really fun.

This sounds awesome! I would 100 percent play this.

Thanks everyone! I’m going to try to make a concept build thingy of it and post it here

I would recommend you make it horror esk, dreams are what make me come up with my ideas and how I would use it in the real world, no one has ever thought about it when it comes to this and maybe the friends list idea is original but it might be a bad idea as it may seem too non linear with current story games we have to date, I would recommend you make something that has to do with the story characters and not really go into the friends group type of thing. That is what I think will work.

Oh, I wasn’t thinking of it as a story game, but that could work! I was thinking of making it more of a level-based thing, where none of the dreams (levels) have anything to do with each other. I don’t really want to make it a story game though due to how overdone the genre is and the sort of stigma around it.

Could I add on that in dreams, words are just random letters, and everytime you look away, they change.

That’s a great idea! I also want to do inconsistent clocks and other stuff like that. I just don’t know how to make it only change when the player isn’t looking.

It isn’t just an idea, it is something that happens in most dreams.

oh that doesn’t happen to me

Thanks for telling me that though!

This seems like a pretty good idea. I would definitely play it if I saw something like this.

This might annoy some players by the way. Some players might try to have a conversation and it’ll annoy them. Unless you plan to make it a 1 player game. (Which a 1 player game idea sounds like a great idea but a multiplayer game is also great as well. Both have their pros and cons)

Else it’s a great game idea. It’ll be cool if the player goes through some sort of story or memory lane in the dream. :slightly_smiling_face:

I was going to have two modes but yeah, that might end up being just when you talk to NPCs.

I make a quick conceptish thing and added it to the post. You can’t tell since it’s a picture but the walkspeed is 8.

I actually really like this idea. It could be cool if you didn’t tell players that they’re in a dream, to make it more mysterious, and they don’t find out until the end.

Do you mean DepthOfField?

I honestly forgot that DOF existed, I’ll probably use that instead of the Blur Effect.

Yeah, if I played a game that had blur on the whole time I’d probably give it a dislike. It just makes it hard to see and annoying.

I always respond to these the same way. It may sound like a good idea but if you implement it wrong or have poor planning or anything of the above, a good idea turns into a bad feature.
