Any Material that has a direction or 'grain' in a Part now orients to World space when Unioned

@WoodReviewer’s gonna go nuts with this one, as well as the other Developers that care about how anything looks in Roblox places…

I tried Unioning some Wood Material Parts and Negations today. Normally the wood grain would stay the same Orientation as the FIRST Part I selected in the process.
Now no matter what order or how you select items Materials face the same direction.

SOMEONE’S GOING TO COMMENT IT’S BECAUSE I’VE SELECTED ALL OF THE FOLLOWING PARTS AND UNIONED THEM AS ONE ITEM AND THE GRAIN IS THAT WAY BECAUSE THEY ARE ONE UNION. YOU CAN SEE THERE ARE 3 PARTS AND 3 SEPARATE UNIONS IN ALL THE PICTURES BELOW…

This is going to ruin a lot of people’s days if they are building detailed projects.
I also wonder what’s going to happen to Unions created that seemed ok to the builder but will probably have to be reverted when this issue is fixed.

Expected behavior

I expect that if I had a single Part, or a group of Parts/Unions/Negations and selected one of them first that the Material ‘grain’ would orient to the first item I selected, not just world space orientation.

I’ve included Beta features in private staff info just to keep this post from being 3 pages long.

I believe this was an intentional change, and I also believe @WoodReviewer addressed this months ago in one of his blog posts (I think he was in support of it and gave a tutorial for working with it? could be wrong tho). That said, I do think this should be a toggle if possible because while this does allow you to use unusual material orientations without having to include any rotated parts in the union, it can be very inconvenient and disrupt workflow as you try to remember the correct way the parts are supposed to be oriented when you’re just trying to do a normal union with correct material orientation.

I believe this is an issue with the “Studio Solid Modeling Improvements” beta. Can you try and verify that it is turned on? We have a fix coming, but in the meantime you can simply disable the beta.

I know I sent the images of my beta settings in the private message and that shows it turned on.
Is there any other way to confirm it’s actually on?

Hey! This is an issue with the new beta, so you will have to turn the beta feature off in order to get the correct behavior back. We have a fix for the beta, but unfortunately it is taking a little longer to roll out that fix.

If someone has the beta on and creates a Union that works at this time will the orientation change when the fix is rolled out?

the union will not change automatically, but if you do additional modeling operations, the box map behavior will swap to the correct one.
