Any suggestions on how to increase retention in my game?

So my game has been released since last month; I would like to hear out some of your suggestions to make my game keep on making players return back.

  1. What do you want to achieve?
I would want to have more concurrent players at least 30 concurrent players; I currently have 5 - 18 concurrent players.

  2. What is the issue?
Most of the new players that tried the game out didn’t return back to my obby and some players lasted for only 5 - 15 mins of playtime.

  3. Solutions you have thought so far?
I thought of reaching my game out to some YouTubers.

Any type of help will be highly appreciated. Thanks!!!

Well, some of the stages were long
And, maybe litttle kids can get discouraged by the skill points thing

Add leaderboards, time played stats, streak system, items, replay value such as difficulty modes, market to 13+ community, advertise on website and on social media

If you want to add unlockable stages
(funny how im saying this and i dont have concurrent players)
good luck!

should I lower the decrease of skill points when you die? or make them not appear at all but silently decreasing it?

I have a statistics gui that includes time played, skill points, rank, deaths, kills from nukes, nukes launched, and such. I will try to advertise on social media. thanks for the suggestion.

Love the game ~ well made.

However, while I was playing, I surpassed quite a lot of levels before dying, which made my achievement feel unrecognised and not even important. You want to make players want to achieve these things. You want to make the player feel like they are achieving awesome things, like passing heaps of levels without dying.

This is getting all scienc-ey, but technology and constant distractions have made us humans seek validation and instant gratification.
Want to keep players hooked? Give them things to work towards. Give them rewards. Players, especially kids these days who are addicted to technology want that instant gratification and rewards.

Kind of ironic that I think technology addiction is bad, and yet I am here telling you how to make people play more

Maybe have some streak start after passing a certain amount of levels without dying.

Maybe award some type of currency for passing levels.

would earning a badge for each rank help?

I am assuming that by rank you mean each stage - probably not, unless you want to spend thousands upon thousands on badges.

I think the best way would be to create some money/point system and allow players to purchase upgrades in game.

Maybe you could create items like 2x Jump for 2 minutes or something to make it easier to pass levels.

i do have a ranking system for having certain skill points tho.

yes but it doesn’t deliver the information in a public manner where the player themselves feel complimented since they have to simply manually look at other player statistics and compare their score in which it’s only they, that they’re aware of that knows about it or not less many

Thank you for all of the suggestions/advices. I would love to hear more advices from others too!

It’s 2022, most people dislike blocky bland default obbies.
Of course, the game itself could took you some time, but still, people want to have some interesting maps, or animations…

Maybe make them not show at all, I can see kids disliking your game because of that

Obbies are off-the-game, try something new, players will come back (make a good one) players keep coming back and back! Obbies discourage some teens
