Over the past 3 years, I’ve uploaded thousands of images, animations, and sounds. Recently, I’ve had more and more of these uploads fail due to how the file is named. An example of an animation name that failed recently is WarMachineP2 FlameLoop – once I changed the name slightly, the upload worked.
I’m often uploading dozens of assets at once, and having one or two fail every time is extremely distruptive – I have to manually keep track of which ones failed and reupload them with a slightly changed name. Often, changing the name by one or two letters allows me to upload the assets properly.
My guess is that something in the upload pipeline thinks that the names are malicious and blocks the upload. Potential solutions I think would be a big improvement:
Filter out the name with hashtags instead of failing the upload completely. At least I don’t have to worry about reuploading the asset
Give trusted developers the ability to upload assets with no checks on the name of the file
Provide a prompt to change the name of the asset instead of failing the upload completely
Having the same issue especially when numbers are present. Despite trident_phase1_attack3 being filtered, trident_phase_one_attack_three wasn’t. If the system is trying to prevent contact information (??) then its performance is questionable.
The perfect solution is to not filter these innocent names, but passing the upload with a filtered name would be very useful if nothing else. Lastly, when individually uploading animations, studio just throws a 400 error with no context that the name is the issue.
Hi @atrazine and @xtntt, thanks for the report. When we cannot partially filter certain strings, our system errs on the stricter side to be safe and hashes the string completely. We will continue to work with the text filtering team to improve the algorithm here so this happens less.
In the meantime though, we agree that blocking upload in these cases disrupts workflows like bulk upload, so we’ve decided to no longer fail when the full string is hashed. From now on, uploads and updates will still succeed, but names and descriptions will be fully hashed if the entire string doesn’t pass our filters.
Please let us know if you are still seeing issues.
