[bug] Russian players cannot connect to Netherland severs (Error Code 279)

Hello Roblox team,

We recently started a new ranked season in our game. In this system, one side creates a server and the other side joins it. However, we have identified a serious connectivity issue:
• Players from Russia and Kazakhstan cannot connect to Dutch servers (Amsterdam).
• When matchmaking assigns the lobby to a Netherlands server, these players get Error Code: 279, and the entire lobby fails/drops.
• This has been ongoing for ~2 months and have affected our previous rank Season 3.

Player Feedback Example:

“There might be several issues causing ghost queues in ranked, but you probably can fix one of them. A significant chunk of the problem is players from Russia/Kazakhstan can’t connect to Dutch servers - they get “Error Code: 279”. This has been an issue for ~2 months and could occur in S3 as well.
When matchmaking puts them on a Netherlands server, the connection fails and the whole lobby drops.

Suggested Fixes:
• If a player is from an affected region, avoid assigning Dutch servers.
• Instead, prioritize Germany or UK servers. The ping difference is minimal for others, but it completely prevents these disconnections.
• Essentially, please avoid routing Russian players through Amsterdam if possible.

This would eliminate a major cause of ghost queues in ranked matchmaking.”

I also found a Reddit thread where players have reported the same problem:

Could you please investigate this issue and confirm if there’s a fix or configuration we can apply?

Thank you!

Hi @tiansuupup. We apologize for our belated response to this matter. We have noticed some connectivity issues from some countries in Eastern Europe and are investigating this matter. Most reports seem to be about connecting to servers in France, so we’d like to take a closer look into Netherlands as well. I noticed that your profile is private, so I was not able to drill down for some data to further investigate this issue. Could you please:

  1. Confirm that connection to Netherlands is still problematic? (This post French servers being inaccessible by east europeans made a couple of weeks after yours suggests otherwise).
  2. Provide a userId that has encountered this issue recently?

Thank you!

Want to add that the issue is mostly resolved but still happens randomly with 20-30% chance at both netherlands and french servers, fortunately tends to work normally compared to what we had earlier

P.S: nvm

This seems to be happening in Car Crushes 2 as well. In our case it’s happening particularly with reserved servers from our Custom Servers browser. Some players get Error Code 279 when they try to teleport to specific servers, and it seems like that happens at every teleport attempt for those players until the active server instance is restarted.

One of these players seem to be from Russia or another eastern region. I could ask for more details if needed:

The PlaceID for all these servers is 72426595787447

I’ve been experiencing this issue on NL, Amsterdam server for the past month or two. ID: 27979636.

I’ve also had a support ticket, related to this issue: 129744710. Unfortunately, the technician on that ticket decided to put the blame on my ISP. I cannot confirm nor deny this, as it’s hard to figure out whether it is the ISP blocking the connection or your server is. I’ve only been able to connect to these servers using Cloudflare WARP.

Hi CorLeoro,
Currently our rank is closed, so there are no recent report. We will have it opened on December 15th. Is it ok if I continue this with you at that time?

turns out it was likely Roscomnadzor testing with the connection blocking on some servers before

now they’ve successfully applied it to all servers, gg.
