Building help | Understanding Your Concept

Hi,

I have a question for mainly all of you low poly/cartoonish style builders but any kind is welcome, which is:
How do you come up with a concept idea of what you want your build to look like?

I felt that I’ve always had trouble understanding what I wanted to build next within a game, and I feel as if that’s something holding me back with my building. What resources do you use if you mind sharing to get inspiration, or if you created a game before, how did you find out what to put where?

Please let me know down below.

Thank you.

@HolidayPwner, seeing your builds made for Traitor and just your builds in general that I’ve see made me come up with this question, so I hope if you see this, that you could enlighten me.

Now, being a former commissioned builder, I always struggled with thinking of what to build.
But with hard work, I came up with a process that I normally used before I quit building.

I first start off with a general idea of what the game is about. Is it a simulator? A hotel? A restaurant? And so on.
Once I think of my main topic, I find some references that are within the topic that I’m looking for, like what type of chairs do I want? Or what is the building style?
Always understand that “references” don’t mean COPYING. You are just getting a basic idea of how your building style should look, and not quote on quote “inspiration”. There is a difference, and the community won’t be happy if you just slapped something copied together.
I then would start building, coming up with new ideas along the way.
I usually just use Google or Roblox as references, but anything is honestly fine. I have found other websites such as Pinterest that are very helpful as well.

I hopethis helps you come with a great idea for a future game that you make.

I usually don’t build low-poly stuff, however I can help here.

I always make sure I can get the most detailed desciption out of the client. Make sure to not be scared to ask questions.
Then, I go to google. There I can search up inspiration, send it to the client and see if they’re happy with it. Pinterest is an amazing place for inspiration as similar images come up. Also, go to Roblox! Even if the client wants something different, you can look for inspiration there. Just be careful that you’re not copying.
Make sure the colour scheme fits the build and/or group. Don’t use warm colours in a snowy landscape etc.

Hope this helps!

Thank you! It’s sometimes easier to go based off what a client want, rather than what I want. lol

Interesting, I notice Pinterest is being mentioned to me, I think that I may start using that again for inspo, thanks!

When it comes to builds, I usually get an idea from references online through Google or even going outside to see real examples to grasp what kind of detail is found within each building. Other sources I recommend are ArtStation or Pinterest for more inspiration. Just kind keep in mind to make it unique and not a straight copy, as that far from taking inspiration and claiming the work as your work.

For new ideas or builds you want to attempt, I would say looking up a random idea generator to help you along your way or perhaps asking your player base for suggestions on what should be added. Hope this helps!

Helps a lot! Thank you so much.

Hi, I’m also really interested in your work. Do you have any tips?

Bit late to the conversation but yeah totally! One of my main resources to get inspiration is def Pinterest. I also hope this is already a given but if you want your game to feel unique I definitely think you should stay away from that generic simplistic low poly look. Look at others people style and see what you can take away from that to make it your own. A lot of serious builders bash on low poly because of its over saturation on the platform but done right it gets love! Don’t be overwhelmed when trying to create your own unique style, overtime you’ll def improve. I still see myself improving every month lol

Thank’s a lot! I saw your showcase on Youtube that Roblox posted (Congratulations by the way) and started checking out some more of your work and you instantly become one of my favorite builders. I really love your style. It’s not really Lowpoly, which is a term that I may have misused, but it has a lovely cartoony essence. Thank you.
