Can I use other peoples' models/assets without explicit permission?

I was wondering this because I have been playing a game recently here:

This game is a straight up copy of the original doors figure boss fight. Everything from the old version.

All they’ve done is credit LSPLASH and say that they aren’t affiliated with “noors” (Yes that’s quoted from what they wrote in their description go check). They never got permission from LSPLASH to steal everything though.

Surely, taking the entire game is not allowed?

Its not the only game doing this, there are others aswell but this game is the first that comes to mind.

So my two questions are:

  1. Allowed? If it isnt thats very strange considering these games are still up and running
  2. How does anyone do this in the first place? Especially since this version of the door 50 boss fight doesn’t even exist anymore.

  1. roblox will not care unless its some big company (like how they did with spongebob and sonic)
  2. copied the game using exploits
  1. Ok maybe but it isnt allowed but most people can get away with it right?
  2. Can you be more specfiic? I understand how they stole the models since its all in the workspace but the coding aspect doesnt make sense. Yes they can copy paste client-side scripts but i’m sure that figure’s pathway system wasn’t client-sided.

yes if you use them youll likely not get taken down
they probably made their own script that looks similar to that

But, if the og creators really wanted to take down these games, would it be easy for them to? And is it ever possible the creator of these copy paste games get sued?

you cant get sued yourself, if anything roblox will get sued but only big souless corporations do that, doors was made on roblox so the most they can do is file a report and get the game deleted

Let’s say, I use the figure model from doors by getting it from the toolbox. However, the creators never published the model themselves to the public. Someone else stole the model and then made it public. Am I in trouble if i use that model?

If they find out, yes very likely. Especially considering doors was taken games that contained their IPs down a couple years back.

Remove @mnillz solution and make mine the solution since he doesn’t know what he’s talking about.

well alright no offense @mnillz

Technically it IS against copyright law in many countries to do this (cough cough Nintendo), so if LSplash finds out about this they can take it down if they want to. The best course of action with these types of things is to make your own stuff or ask for permission before using their stuff. You can also use things that have been specifically marked as free use (such as Creative Commons 0).

I thought free models uploaded on the toolbox were free to use?

Nah they are, I more meant in an outside Roblox sense. Stuff uploaded to the Roblox toolbox and some other platforms outside of Roblox exist for the purpose of free-to-use stuff. I should’ve clarified that.

So if I use a model that was stolen from another game and uploaded by the thief to the toolbox. Could I get in trouble?

Depends but most likely no.

If Roblox takes action they’ll probably just remove and punish the person who uploaded the stolen item and the item will be unavailable in your experience. On another persons end who is using something someone else stole from the toolbox, they can still be held accountable for using said stolen item since they did not get permission from the license holder to use the item. Best course of action is to just not use things from existing IPs unless given express permission from the license holder.

For the case of the listed game, it is literally just a section taken directly from Doors which does go against copyright law and LSPLASH can take down the game if they wanted to. Doesn’t help that they spell “Doors” as “Noors” which to me at least, looks like they’re trying to confuse Roblox’s game discovery so it doesn’t get found out.

TL;DR
Yes, if you use something taken by another game on the toolbox you could get in trouble.

Figure’s Library does go against copyright law as it uses assets from Doors seemingly without permission.

that kinda sucks i wanted to find good looking free models that i could use without getting in trouble because im a scripter and can design UI but i cant model. do you know anywhere i can find good looking models copyright free?

Probably sketchfab. A decent amount of the stuff there is paid, but there is some free things there also.

do these import into roblox studio properly?

here comes mr im right, we literally said the same thing :roll_eyes:

Yes you are, you are still in trouble for using their intellectual property.
