Characters for my horror game

I’m currently making a side project horror game that is in the classic Roblox style which I just started a few days ago. It takes inspiration from the Wonderland.jar mod (A Minecraft horror mod), Late July, Midsummer, and other liminal-space/horror related media.

I already have a lot of things done but one thing I still not very confident on are the character designs. I don’t know how to feel about them. What do you think about them? How can I make them better? Every reply will be appreciated!

I mean they fit the theming but overall they aren’t scary, but that being said, you are using a minecraft “horror” mod as inspiration so odds are the game just won’t be scary to begin with, but then that being said, what roblox “horror” games are actually scary? None of them are, they all suck at being scary to be completely honest.

Put simply it fits the theme of the game but aint looking scary, but when the barrier to entry for roblox “horror” is literally just the floor, it doesn’t really matter.

While I don’t know anything about the Wonderland.jar mod, I think that these characters are overall pretty creepy. Obviously to some they may not look as scary with the bright atmosphere, but I’d say keep going!

One thing that adds to the scariness (and I’m not sure the overall dynamics of your game) is sound design. Some creepy emitting sounds definitely adds to each character.

The two least creepy ones to me (in their current state) is the 100% reflectance character, the guest beside him and the character on the far right. But maybe the sound design, a creepy face, or giant creepy eyes (or all 3 of these) could do the trick.

Also, don’t be discouraged from thinking that any of them aren’t creepy by their looks. Something doesn’t need to rely on it’s appearance alone to be creepy, but also it’s behavior.

For example, I’ve been jump-scared by the stupidest things through the years of playing Roblox, even by zombies that have 2 colors total for their skin from head to toe. Or noobs that have the most friendly and basic color. Majority of the time it’s when I’ve turned around, didn’t expect to see them, and they were right in my face. It also matters of the environment they are in (and of-course, sounds).

Trying to make this game scary when In the retro style is quite difficult to do. I agree that most Roblox games on the platform are not scary at all and some of them can be just outright trash. Like those Mimic knockoffs and the cashgrab experience games from a few years back. Thanks for the feedback and being honest!

A lot of very good games I have played on and outside of Roblox will sometimes have characters that aren’t necessarily scary in design, but the main thing that makes them scary is the way they act and the environment they are in, like what you said.

I feel like i have try to make them creepy at most, even though them being in the classic Roblox style ruins the scary factor on them. When I get to fixing the environment and atmosphere, I’ll make it more spooky but still keeping the retro aesthetic which will help to make the character look and appear more scary.

Thanks for feedback!
