Clarify & Solve the "YT" in Usernames Issue | Improve Moderation on Usernames Suspected of "Directing Users Off-Platform"

As a Roblox developer, it is currently too hard to know that my Username will be okay to use in the future. That I won’t be moderated or given a warning for a Username that was previously okay to use on the platform.

Specifically, many developers and players have had their accounts moderated or warned due to having “YT” somewhere in their Username. This blindsided them, and the policy has been shaky and enforced shakily as well.
Clarification & improvement to this rule can rebuild community-to-Roblox trust.

Brief Background

Throughout Roblox’s history, it’s been popular to put “YT” -as in YouTube- in Usernames.
The Roblox community grew with YouTube, so it’s a natural thing to some.

Now, some do this as real YouTubers, some can get traffic that way, but most people who did/do this are fans of large YouTubers. It was and is a trend, not malicious.

Roblox’s Scale & Compliance

With Roblox’s scale, I understand there are regional restrictions and laws to comply with.
One of these restrictions seems to be no “Directing Users Off-Platform.”
And Roblox has taken this rule to apply to Usernames.

That means no “YT” in Usernames, as some can see that YT, recognize it means YouTube, and then go search that person up. Most people don’t go through that process, but I can see the reasoning behind Roblox’s decision to not allow these kinds of usernames.

The Social Links feature on Roblox profiles only show based on regional and/or age requirements -as to why that is allowed and Usernames aren’t.

The History of This Issue

In 2022, KreekCraft made a YouTube video talking about the community getting moderated [not warned], for having “YT” in their Username. That the issue was happening for two months. That Roblox “responded” via the appeals customer support:

If your account has a social media reference it will not be moderated at this time.

Another quote reading:

We are only able to change a username for free or remove a previous username for concerns related to Personally Identifiable Information (PII).

The issue was considered resolved, with that last quote giving a little color on an issue that would come later.

In 2023, ChloeGames made a video about the same issue citing KreekCraft’s video linked above from 2022. That people were being banned due to the policy that was previously resolved. ChloeGames also details the problem of the payment requirement to change their Username.

In 2026, ChloeGames made another video about the same issue, citing the previous video she made that’s above. This time people are getting warned, clarification from some admins from a third-party source, and commentary on the problem.

In short, nowadays, there’s lots of speculation on what the rule is, so clarification would be great.

Use Cases & Finding them On DevForum

Many use cases can be found through the YouTube videos linked under the History section of this post -some resolved, some may not be, some recent- but a recent example is this DevForum post. In said post, there’s a cited quote of another developer detailing their confusion. Being moderated for a previously un-enforced or non-existent policy feels wrong.

This particularly is alarming:

It seems the Username issue for having “YT” is impacting accounts with a Warning, but a Permanent Record kind of Warning that penalizes the user.

Based on those accounts, there’s a recent wave of this issue. Yet, I’m sure there are many posts here on the DevForum about this issue from 2022 to now.

Note on difficulty of researching this topic

I tried to research this, with no bug reports or feature requests I could find on it [but that can be an issue of historical inaccessibility to those categories].

Some users post under the Help and Feedback > Platform Usage Support category, a de-facto place for many with issues, but finding more cases is difficult due to impacted users using different terminology in their titles.

This is a note of good faith, this took 2-3 hours.

The Ask

The community shouldn’t be left in the dark when things change or are required to be enforced.
We should be gracefully told.

To me, that means NO moderation, NO warning that shows a penalty on the account, and a FREE Username change. An email or note -for the delivery method- as is the practice for warnings for this issue as of now. Just without a penalty.

Conclusion

If Roblox is able to address this issue, it would improve my development experience because then I could focus on developing games rather than worrying about my Username. Or, more, down the line, developers shouldn’t face confusion or consequences for this rule.

Thanks for seeking attention to audiences. In case, I got temporary banned again by repeating mistakes of robot moderation after appealed from my warning letter in this platform:

The recent incidents, huge deteriorate again & again! It’s time to uprising against Roblox Corporation after mass banned against innocent usernames, associated with social media name. Ordered by Wat Tyler (Medieval) & Robert Kett (Renaissance)!

Where do you find the Account Status page?

https://www.roblox.com/safety-dashboard is the link.

It’s interesting though cause I don’t think you’d be able to access this without looking up the URL.
I couldn’t find it on Mobile either.

I tried to open that link, and it simply directs me to an empty page!

Try entering these links again either:

  1. Roblox Safety Dahboard | https://www.roblox.com/safety-dashboard#/
  2. Roblox Violation Record | https://www.roblox.com/safety-dashboard#/violations

The feature isn’t available to everybody yet, if the page is blank then you most likely cannot access it yet on the specific account

Might work on other ones though

Not permanent. According to roblox’s new dashboard, the status will automatically change back to normal over time (Personally all my violations expired as well):

Still seems to be excessive though if the critical status came from the username reset alone

Should be visible under the “Help & Safety” tab which is available both on the mobile sidebar or on PC when clicking at the top right dots

This is something i agree with. It does violate roblox’s policies, but they should’ve put in an announcement and temporarily offered the user to resolve the issue themselves by changing the username before they started moderating accounts over it. Silently starting a banwave over this seems to be way too excessive

I understand it was always against their rules but this shouldn’t have happened at all

Didn’t work. I’ll assume that I simply just can’t access it yet, like @Soundmoji said
