Creator Spotlight: How Qwelver Dreamed Up Dandy’s World

I think this is a good example of rumors and hearsay though. You can’t use makeship for commercial products. So, it would be irrelevant for them to care about Rox since Qwelver’s project manager was not even considering this for toy sales. On the continued beating of a dead horse about the inner workings of her mind, none us are mind readers. What we do know is the two of them were friends and Rox was her lead developer, while she worked on the administrative side of her game. Later on, some accusations were made against Rox and what would you expect her to do? Believe every rando out on the Internet? Just because some accusations were made doesn’t automatically mean “you already knew”. Later on, she did believe the accusations because someone sent her something that she believed was proof. The rest is history at that point.

Everyone seems to forget that we are talking about very young adults and teens here. That doesn’t mean an automatic pass on life, but there are a lot of life experiences (good or bad) that young people don’t know until they know. It’s odd how this continues to come up a year later as though it has some moral or negative effect on the current dev team that works on Dandy’s World.

The “Creator” is what the spotlight article focuses on, not the people she fired. Otherwise, you could make the same argument for any game or Roblox itself. The popularity of the game suggest that players aren’t interested in what happened during early development. Unless you are friends with the victim here to defend or friends of the accused here to defend them also? Neither myself nor anyone else has anything to gain by trying to side-track this article about it. :face_with_raised_eyebrow:

nice post! hope the developers aren’t notorious for knowingly hiring criminals!! (allegedly)

The information about the co-developer isn’t alleged by the way, although I think it’s “unfair” to assosiate the old development team with the new one.

I could also someone see why Qwelver kept the co-developer on the team for so long, assuming she didn’t know what he really did and likely got lied to by him. If your friend was outed as a problematic person, you’d wan’t to trust them, especcially if people calling out your friend were doing it in a way that wasn’t really good.

I don’t think we should dogpile on Qwelver for the situation (especcially as much as people do now, months after everything happen.) Is it fair to critize Qwelver for having someone like that on her team? Yes! I do think she couldn’t done more earlier. But should we bring it up everytime something related to Dandys World (and less Flavor Frenzy) appears, months after everything happen? No. Qwelver (and her team) has even made the effort to remove his work entirely, reworking models and animations he made.

For context I play Dandys World, mainly just for inspo for my own game and I like it’s progression (research/toon collecting), but I don’t like how critical people are on the game on small things or things out of the developers control.

A game targetted towards kids gets popular among kids? Shocker! That’s also just destructive critism, theres nothing to add (Infact I think Dandys World is leagues better than alot of other games for a younger audience)

Why don’t people comment on how they feel about the game and actually play it instead of just judging it based on public perception.

I wish people had more constructive rather than destructive critisms, but hey, that’s me.

Spreading misinformation isn’t having an opinion, it’s just spreading misinformation.

Seeing comments like:

“This game isn’t really fun”
“Why do people play this??”
“Wasn’t the creator part of some drama???”

Under a Creator Spotlight makes me sad, not even related in the slightest. :frowning:

You have provided no proof on anything that you’ve said and if you clearly have read what I said, I don’t give the development team the greenlight, and I do agree that keeping him on the team was a bad idea, I clearly say this here: “Is it fair to critize Qwelver for having someone like that on her team? Yes! I do think she couldn’t done more earlier.”

I only defended them on how other people dealt the sitaution & their line of thinking (mostly)

Disliking the development team for having him on the team is valid but spreading information without even having solid proof isn’t having and sharing your opinion, it’s spreading baseless accusations on a serious matter with real human victims.

I perfer to talk more about this in DMs because this discussion is just adding more to the spotlight and I think we should talk more about the actual game here rather than any sitauations or “drama” surrouding it.

You opinion and comments don’t bother me. But they seem out of place here. It’s no different than if you were in the creator spotlight article and all I did was talk about something bad that happened during your game development. Especially if it was out of your control and caused by someone else. All this does is pollute the conversation here. Qwelver could be in this topic answering questions and taking genuine feedback for her game, but why should she if the only criticisms she gets is about some mistakes she made in trusting people? At this point, I will just ignore these types of post here because it really adds nothing to the topic.

Same tbh it’s not really anything original or new

The victims have literally said that Qwel was manipulated. Why is this still up for debate? The person you’re talking about isn’t just the creator of Dandy’s World but a human being who was young in their development career and got taken advantage of. I’m begging people here to do more than 5 minutes of research before bringing back allegations against an innocent person whose finally getting the spotlight for their hard work. You’re not helping the victims, you’re not bringing Rox to justice, you’re not helping anyone.

I’m going insane. This community is like a gossiping high school with how they play around with rumors. There’s so much blatant disrespect here.

I love how people who don’t care about Roblox drama (me) have no idea what’s going on. :sob:

I’ve played both games (Minus Elevation I play regularly), and I couldn’t have said it better myself, both games do in fact share similar gameplay loops.

However, as I’ll share below, there are a lot more similarities than you might think. — This is a bit hyperbolic, there’s a lot less than I’m implying, but similarities nonetheless!

Gameplay Mechanics

  • Research
In both games, research is a fundamental game mechanic. There’s a lot more ways to Obtain Research in Minus Elevation, like getting killed by entities, getting spotted by them, using items, and collecting Clipboards. The Dandy’s World Wiki doesn’t seem to outline similar mechanics, except for Research Capsules and getting spotted by twisteds. Research Capsules are obtained similarly to Clipboards, spawning around each floor and giving you a small percentage of research, the research being of a random twisted/entity in the floor.

  • Trinkets
Trinkets are ‘items’ that are obtained when getting 100% research on a Twisted. They can also be obtained via Dandy’s Store in the lobby, but research is the main focus here. Each Twisted has their own trinket, granting unique buffs and abilities. As opposed to Minus Elevation, which has Plushies. Plushies are key items that are obtained when reaching 100% research on an Entity. Each plushie is, well, a plushie form of the said entity. Plushies give items, buffs, and special abilities. Not only do Trinkets share the same purpose, they are obtained quite similarly as well.

Entity/Twisted Similarities?

  • Rodger
Rodger is a Toon in Dandy’s World that released along with the game on June 14th. It’s Twisted Version has similar mechanics to an entity in Minus Elevation, that of which I’ll explain later. Twisted Rodger hides as a Research Capsule, but without tapes strapped on it (see below) Interacting with this capsule will give you two debuffs and make him appear.

Angler is a rare Entity in Minus Elevation, which released with the Halloween P1 (Part One) Update in 2023. Angler can spawn in floor 20 or above, or alternatively via the Item Red Sea Skull, the debuff, in which, spawns the entity. A key similarity between Rodger and Angler is their main “ability”. It’s moreso an ability for Angler, and moreso a method of encountering such entity with Rodger. If Angler is on the floor, some items will turn into traps, which is indicated by the yellow sparkles they emit. Interacting with these items will give you the “Lure” debuff, which forces you to move towards Angler.

Co-Developer knows about Minus Elevation?

You may know Dandy’s World for one of it’s co-developers, Rox. This person doesn’t really need introduction, as it sparked up a lot of drama in the Dandy’s World community, and why many people know about the game today. To put it short, though, they were fired due to pedophilia/grooming.

What many people do not know, however, is that unlike Qwelver, who denied knowing about Minus Elevation (see below), Rox was not only aware of Minus Elevation, but enjoyed playing it, so much so they even created fanart.

Qwelver denying relation to Minus Elevation, given the wording of this she doesn’t seem to know what the game is, either.

'Feel like this is a biiiiiit of a stretch. I don’t see the similarities between these games at all. If you mean in terms of artstyle, I see what you mean, but gameplay-wise? Not really:

  • Minus Elevation: Descend deeper into the facility, pressing buttons to power the elevator, avoid the entities and gather their info as they get more powerful each floor, and choose upgrades wisely.

  • Dandy’s World: Descend deeper into Gardenview Center (not sure whether it’s a facility or not but it appears so) as a Toon, ‘complete’ or fix machines, avoid the twisteds, gather their info, and choose upgrades wisely.

  • Piggy: Avoid the Piggy whilst escaping multiple ‘maps’ or locations. Find tools and solve puzzles, unlocking escape routes, with each map contributing to a larger, unfolding storyline.

  • Spider: Just like piggy, but the antagonist is a Spider. — Side note, I really miss this game. It had so much potential.

  • Rainbow Friends: You’re in a field trip goes horribly wrong. Trapped in a facility, you must complete tasks for a mysterious person to escape, whilst avoiding the more and more monsters each night. — Turns out these same people made Spider. Guess they have a habit of releasing small games that barely get updated?

So… Yeah, I don’t see what you mean.

Whether these are coincidences or not, Dandy’s World is a solid game! Kudos to Qwelver, you absolutely deserve the success. As for ME and MD, I hope they get the recognition they deserve.

There’s no proof of Qwel lying about it, as it was Rox who played Minus Elevation. No doubt with the amount of influence Rox had on the development of Dandy’s World’s core mechanics that they took inspiration, consciously or not. Though I don’t know why people are using this as a forum to complain about Dandy’s World’s success because it has mechanics that are similar to another game, as if Minus Elevation ‘deserved it more’.

It’s pretty depressing considering Dandy’s World, in a sea of frontpage games with loot boxes and aggressive monetization catered toward children, has managed to find its footing while building up a vast creative community.

Proof is required when the claim does reputable harm to someone? There’s not a single instance of Qwel acknowledging or knowing of Minus Elevation’s existence up until it was brought up to her. No one said that Qwel ‘didn’t know where their gameplay came from’ either, and frankly I don’t know what you’re getting at here. You can’t trace back the origin of every idea you’ve had or why you had them, or even the majority of them. It’s much more likely that Rox proposed them to Qwel while it was being conceptualized. Much more than Qwel for some reason lying about her inspiration knowing she can only lose from it if people found out she was lying.

Even just a few things inspired by Minus Elevation intentionally or not would cause Dandy’s World’s other mechanics to converge to similar ones as Minus. You know why? Because there’s only so many ways to execute this style of gameplay, especially with the limitations of what makes a Roblox game succeed.

I’m gonna stop replying now because this was never the forum or place for this type of conversation tbh. Just be careful with the people you accuse because one day it could be you @_@

That makes me even more disgusted at this game. No doubt that that’s not a coincidence unless Rox wasn’t really involved with the game (as a co-developer, he probably was). Credit where credit’s due. That really stinks for Minus Elevation, which really needs and deserves some recognition.

By the same logic, that could be used against minus elevation. Do you think they created their game in a vacuum of no other similar games? The only thing you are promoting is guilt by association.

I understand if you are frustrated.
I too am frustrated. I feel that I can’t expect any nuance from other developers on the forum, especially since I already don’t get along with some of the developers here.

I feel that I’ve been misunderstood as a critic of Qwel rather than some one who simply pointing out what I felt was obvious.

I’m quite the same, I do not know what’s going on.

Just had to be careful on what I say since I may or may not being sued rn for that exact reason

There are new allegations of Qwelver knowing and choosing not to do anything but again they are allegations

couldn’t have seen that coming

i like game mechanics, doesn’t mean i don’t like the game itself & i make it clear on how i dislike people being critical on small things (this even goes for media i don’t care about or play, like minecraft), which can be applied to anything

i also meant this as on critism on the game, not it’s developers (which i don’t like as much as i do for others for not really adding anything gameplay changinh

i actually didn’t know this at the time so thanks for telling me

makes sense since, i just wanted to show how Rox WAS a bad person & how his actions did happen
