Creator Store Model Monetization Coming Soon: Start Pricing Your Models!

Hey Creators,

Soon, you will be able to sell Models on the Creator Store for United States Dollars (USD) and we would like to invite you to start preparing your Models for sale ahead of the full launch!

Update: Buy and Sell Models on the Creator Store :woman_dancing:

Purchasing is not available yet on Creator Store so your Detail Pages will not be visible if you toggle a priced Model for distribution. Priced Models will automatically become visible when Model monetization launches.

A few recommendations and reminders:

Building your Model Detail Page

To help buyers understand and trust your Models, we suggest:

  • Writing clear titles and detailed descriptions of the features and contents of your Model
  • Uploading high-quality images that show off your Models up close
  • Adding a custom thumbnail camera to capture a good perspective of your Model
  • Showcasing your Models in action with a short demo video or by adding a link to a demo experience so buyers can Try in Roblox

We’re so excited to see what you create and can’t wait to launch Model commerce very soon!

Thanks,
Creator Store Team

Will I be able to sell Models for Robux?

  • No, you can only price assets on the Creator Store in USD. The real-world pricing model does not currently support Robux. We understand this change has introduced friction for younger creators and has been frustrating for creators who live in unsupported regions. As stated in our Terms of Use, Robux are not a substitute for real currency and have no equivalent value in real currency.

My country currently is not supported, how can I sell my Models?

  • Due to regional restrictions, the Creator Store has limited support for some buyers and sellers. In order to become a seller, you must reside in one of the countries supported by our third-party payments provider.

Can I sell my existing Models?

  • Any Image or Mesh dependency created before opting into the Asset Privacy Beta is set to open-use by default - this means they are freely available for use by anyone on Roblox. To protect access to your content, we recommend only selling newly-uploaded or versioned Models which have all dependencies set to Restricted. If you do not set your dependencies to Restricted, anyone will be able to easily access and use your Mesh and Image assets.

In addition, you can only sell Models and plugins that you own from an individual account; you cannot sell group-owned assets or assets owned by someone else.

Can I directly share my own Models with others, even if I’m selling it on the Creator Store?

  • Yes. You can freely share your Restricted Models (that were created by you) with other users, groups, or experiences via Creator Hub’s asset permissions page.

Can I sell something I edited, but originally bought from someone else on the Creator Store?

  • No, you cannot sell or distribute composite Models that contain Restricted assets that you didn’t create (with the exception of Audio and Video that is also available on the Creator Store). You can share these Models directly with your collaborators but we will not allow you to list assets you did not create on Store.

Is Asset Privacy a form of DRM (Digital Rights Management)? Does it prevent others from sharing my paid Models with others?

  • No, the Asset Privacy feature controls how users can purchase and load your assets on Roblox - it is not a form of DRM. In order to make collaboration as open as possible, we do not currently have plans to introduce DRM.

If you suspect a rights violation involving your asset, you can submit the content for removal using the Rights Manager.

Will my paid Models be used to train Roblox’s AI?

  • You can configure your data-sharing preferences via Creator Hub. Paid Models will only be used for AI-enhancement purposes if you choose to opt-in to data sharing. If you opt-in an asset (default for free assets on the Store) and then later opt out, Roblox will remove it from the training dataset within 30 days. Any AI Models that were trained using your data will be updated within 365 days. More info available here.

I feel like this is just going to end with people being scammed, stolen from, or just straight up backdoored but I suppose we’ll see how much Roblox cares about that.

Why would I bother selling models on Roblox if someone is just going to steal and re-upload them for free, and Roblox is not going to even attempt to fight that?

Sure, you can just issue a DMCA. But the harm caused by stolen models is in fact irreparable because once someone has it there’s nothing stopping it from proliferating freely and then it becomes a game of cat and mouse.

Free models are no longer free

Interesting changes. I hope that most of the models that get sold for real money are of actual high quality, but I don’t personally have faith in the ROBLOX community to not make cash grabs of this.

Mixed feelings overall, there’s room for good and there’s room for… a lot of bad.

We’ll have to wait and see how it goes.

oh yeah and this whole thing is rendered entirely pointless if people can just steal the models and upload them for free :skull:

This seems like a good update but the fact there is no option to price your models for Robux is baffling and makes this a lot less useful. USD pricing is really not the way forward and if Robux were added for model purchasing it would be far more useful.

This is would be a lot cooler if we could buy or sell for robux instead of USD

Imagine getting scammed and make a ripped copy version from the original creator which is free. :skull::folded_hands:

Agreed. Not being able to sell for robux is a massive downside, I’m really not sure why that’s a restriction.

If any ROBLOX staff wants to give us an actual reason for this decision, I would greatly appreciate it.

Local Packages or pointer instances and properties next?

Because Models in general would benefit from things that aren’t cloud packages, perhaps, depends how they’re bundled.

not sure how I feel about this…

The toolbox has been used as a way to quickly and easily obtain free models for the game (especially useful for newer creators or those who don’t want to spend a lot of time and money on models and assets). This kind of ruins that, and now it feels like those models people resell. Not sure how many people are going to choose to actually buy something off the toolbox instead of just hiring someone or buying a bundle of models from a different source.

First plugins turned from robux to USD and now models are USD. At this point you HAVE to spend real life USD to make a game and it requires a lot more time and effort to create something for free and almost impossible to get stuff with robux. I don’t really like this transition to USD to be honest.

There really should be an option for Robux in the future, makes it so much more accessible and encourages more people to buy. Would rather spend 200 Robux then have to put in my card for $1.99

I mean we already have ObjectValues? Unless you’re talking about something else

uhhhh nope. I am now going to do it I think

ObjectValues store an object that point to an instance

Pointer alike Instances and or Properties though similar to how Packages sync all the data model, Local Packages or Pointer instances would just shadow clone the instance.

I am very excited for this, but I do have two questions:

Firstly, will there be any system in place to prevent or reduce piracy of models?

I understand that there’s maybe not a lot that can be done off-platform, but will there be any system or technology that’s designed to detect reuploads and automatically flag and take them down (unless manually appealed)?

Secondly, will there be any improvements to the existing AI moderation system regarding marketplace assets?

I’ve had issues with the rules regarding Asset Moderation:

Specifically regarding obfuscation or LuaVMs. I can understand some amount of this, however, one of my open source tools, my API Service module, had been falsely flagged as such. I’ve narrowed it down to using a very large JSON API dump as the cause. While I will soon be releasing a much smaller dump (about an 80% reduction) that will also be a direct Lua module rather than JSON, I still worry that it may be automatically flagged even though it’s harmless.

My intention is to use it to get the properties that are available for any given instance/class. This has many uses, anywhere from creating an in-game explorer to creating a visual script editor. If the API dump gets flagged, nothing like that will be possible to sell on Roblox’s platform.

What will be done about this?

I’ll also add on that I never liked plugins being exclusively USD either. Robux should always be an option. I am happy that Roblox won’t take a cut of this at least.

To explain the above for those scrolling:

Outside of the normal 30% cut that Roblox takes from spent Robux, DevEx also takes a 62% cut (at the current exchange rate), which would turn a normally $5 purchase into only $1.90 for the seller. As it currently is, USD marketplace sales will give the seller 100% of their profits. This calculation is assuming that we exclude the normal 30% cut.

You can find the math in this post.

Additionally, I’m also still waiting for a donation option to be available.

I believe this was mentioned forever ago, at an RDC, by @Elttob (sorry for the ping). It would be nice to be able to offer particular assets for an amount chosen by the buyer, perhaps with a developer-set range, including no payment (free).
