Cross-Place Item Transfer Using ServerStorage

Tired of items disappearing when players teleport? Here’s a simple server-only technique that keeps inventories consistent across places.

Instead of moving the actual objects, you only send their names/IDs, and then the new place pulls the real items directly from ServerStorage.

:movie_camera: Demo video: [YOUTUBE] No Uploads. No Transfers. Just Teleport. (Roblox Dev Idea)

The trick: the item itself never travels. It already exists in every place’s ServerStorage — the server just reissues it to the player based on teleport data.

:hammer_and_wrench: How It Works

  • Before teleporting, the server collects the names/IDs of the player’s items.
  • These names are stored in teleportData via TeleportService:TeleportAsync.
  • When the player joins the new place, the server checks TeleportData.savedItems.
  • For each entry, the server finds the matching item in ServerStorage, clones it, and puts it into the player’s backpack/character.

No replication, no client involvement — all server-side.

:white_check_mark: Why This Method?

  • Lightweight: only names/IDs travel, not full objects.
  • Secure: players can’t inject fake items; only what exists in ServerStorage can be given.
  • Simple: no need to rebuild items — they’re already defined in each place.
  • Consistent: every place shares the same item definitions in ServerStorage.

:warning: Things To Keep In Mind

  • Always validate item names/IDs (ignore anything that doesn’t exist in ServerStorage).
  • Ensure every place in your game has the same set of items inside ServerStorage.
  • Handle failed teleports gracefully to prevent duplication or loss.

:light_bulb: Example

  • In Place A, a player has a “Sword” and “Shield.”
  • When they teleport, only {"Sword", "Shield"} is sent in teleportData.
  • In Place B, the server reads that list, finds the Sword and Shield in ServerStorage, and clones them into the player’s backpack.

To the player, it looks like their items followed them — but really, they were just reissued by the server.

:pushpin: When To Use This

  • Hub games with multiple worlds/places
  • Dungeon or instance systems
  • Adventure games with shared gear across different maps

That’s it — transfer names only, and let ServerStorage do the heavy lifting.

What do you think? Have you used this approach, or do you handle cross-place inventories differently?

You didn’t even read what I wrote, you just commented. Have you seen my video? It explains everything clearly. Please don’t judge without reading or watching first.

I also want to be open about something: I have a disability. If I don’t use tools to help me, people mock me for spelling mistakes. If I do use them, people mock me for using AI. It feels like a lose–lose situation.

I’m still learning English and working on improving my spelling, but I’m in the process. That doesn’t mean I can’t share my ideas — the method I showed is simple and it works. The video proves that.

So please, instead of dismissing me, try to understand the idea and the effort behind it.

i didnt need to read what you wrote i was just telling you what category to put it in

Thanks for clarifying. I understand now that you were pointing out the category. The way it came across at first felt like you were dismissing the post without reading it, which is why I reacted strongly.

I’ll look into moving it under Resources > Community Tutorials as suggested. I just wanted to make sure people also see the video where I actually explain the method, because that’s the main part of what I’m sharing.

Appreciate the feedback.

where is the part where you show us the code🤔
you don’t even show us how to use teleport data..

I don’t want to give you the code directly—I’ve already shared the method and the idea. If I hand you the full code, you won’t really learn from it. But if I just say, “Here’s the method you can use—now write it yourself,” you’ll gain much more understanding. That’s why I approached it this way—so you can learn better by doing it on your own.

that’s not how tutorials nor resources work…

community resources is different from community tutorials, you are complaining about no code being shown when the issue is that the tutorial is very vague (besides the possible ai usage)

for op, as i said, while i can understand what you mean in your tutorial, you gotta keep in mind that many people look for tutorials as a guide but some have very little knowledge of luau. you state that the server collects the names and ids of the player’s items, but how is that done? for us this may be obvious, a table with ids that reference items in a folder, for others it isn’t, and you don’t have to give away an entire inventory system, you can simply state that for this you may need a module (maybe give an example of it) that you can require with another script which contains the references to the items such as key is the id and value is the item (such as a tool), you could state what teleportdata is, is it a table? is it an instance? is it parsed as a parameter in the function?

overall, i think there should be a more in-depth explanation for the steps, you dont have to give the entire code right away, some snippets of certain things (like a module referencing item ids) could be great for a guide, as well as referencing the functions needed.

also one last thing is that teleportdata is not as secure as it seems, this is client data which can be manipulated (as stated in the docs) so a hacker can modify the values in the table so it gives them a lot of whatever-item-is-the-best-gold-edition

No way you didn’t even change the text of the ai, you just used the keyboard shortcut ctrl+c ctrl+v, besides, YOUR POST DOESN’T NEED TO EXIST, BECAUSE THAT’S WHAT EVERYONE KNOWS. Literally the only way to implement this is to transfer a table of item names to TeleportData, and then get them by name → This is literally the only way. Your post is not needed in the first place because there is an AI that can create not only “Tutorials on Moving items between locations via ServerStorage” but also a script for “Moving items between locations via ServerStorage”.

The theory of the dead Internet

yoyoyoyoyoyoy, I just read and realized that you actually have an excuse for using Chat gpt. In that case, I’m sorry, but you’re wrong about a lot of things you’ve said before. However, I still don’t like the post, and you could at least include a link to the API.

if you know how to do this that doesn’t mean everyone does idiot

Read the second part of my message, and don’t call me an idiot when you don’t even understand the semantics of the text. Focusing on the keywords, it seems like you didn’t get the point at all, lol
P.S there is a mention of AI, also your justification for this post doesn’t work because it doesn’t even provide a link to the Teleport API :joy:

some people on the devforum might need to use this tutorial?? like all tutorials on the forum?? all you said is “this post is useless” and “everyone already knows how to do this”

No one will need this post, and no one will use it, because it doesn’t answer the main question of the topic. Even in literature classes, we are taught how to write a text. This post only provides answers to the questions “How does it work?” and “Why?” However, it doesn’t answer the central question, which should lead to the previous ones - “How to do it?” And do you know why? The author didn’t want to share a poor AI code. I have never said that no one would need other tutorials. Compare any post with this one, and you will understand. Any other post is better formulated, written by a human, and ultimately answers relevant questions. This one does none of the above and carries such a shallow meaning (a response to 4 lines with secondary significance) that it cannot be taken seriously as useful.

If you want to say something so much, write directly, not here. Because the next message will already be off-topic (unlike mine, which contains at least 40% constructive criticism and 60% non-constructive “it’s pointless”)

if you get the answers to ‘how does it work’ and ‘why’ then you should be smart enough to figure the rest out yourself

also they LITERALLY show you how to do it in the video anyways :sob:

how it works: OOP is object orientated paradigm that work via tables
why? Its making programming easier

so how I would know I should use constructor with setmetatable?

And you’re right about the video but They don’t load for me. If there’s a code there, then it removes many of the mistakes from it

u shouldn`t use metatables
I just thought it would be easier for you to understand the meaning. Of course, for simple cases, it’s better to use {attributes, function = linkToFunc}, and if the case is complex, use ECS. It’s much easier to explain the return metatable to a person than to explain function linking, and this method is no longer OOP but a parody of it, which is even further from true OOP than the prototype OOP of luau.

why tf would you need metatables?? all you need to do is send a table to the second place and read it?

Hey uh guys you should probably move this to private messages (but add me because its entertaining for some reason)
