Hi there, I labeled it as a bug even though I’m not entirely sure it’s a bug.
Essentially, lots of display names are taken for brands and creators - which I completely understand. However, some creators and brands have very generic display names, for example ‘‘Hugo’’. The brand Hugo Boss has the username Hugo, meaning it cannot be used. Given that this is a common name, why should it be blocked?
Expected behavior
Users should be able to use generic names even if brands have them.
Hello! Generally, we’d like to avoid blocking common words/names from being set as display names, but the line between common and unique can be blurry. Given that subjective nature, we’re not planning to make wider reaching changes to that validation process at this time.
We have updated the error messaging in some scenarios to clarify why a proposed display name is not allowed, though. The goal is to make “Display name is not appropriate” message show up less frequently (primarily targeting cases of proposing profane/vulgar/etc. display names) and have a more clear message take its place when possible.
Hi! Yes I totally understand that. However the display name ‘‘Hugo’’ is not unique, in my opinion.
My reasoning behind this is the name Hugo was created in the middle ages, whereas the brand Hugo was created in 1993 by Hugo Boss.
Hugo is a very common name, so therefore believe it should be unblocked. I do not believe there would be confusion with players if the name was unlocked.
As I say, for brands like say Gucci or Louis Vuitton - then 100% - however I find it unfair to unblock a first name which is popular across the globe as it limits players to express themselves.
I don’t want to bump this topic, but many common names have been blocked by the display name system due to verified users, administrators, or Star Creators on the Roblox website having those names as their usernames.
For example, “Hugo” is not allowed as a display name because the account @HUGO is verified on the Roblox platform. This results in other players being denied the ability to use that name as their display name.
In my case, the situation is slightly different but similar in nature. My Roblox username is @mattsql, so I would like to use “matt” as my display name. However, the system responds similarly to the “Hugo” case, because a Roblox administrator with the username @matt already exists. This prevents anyone else from using that name as a display name.
It would be great if short usernames of around 3-4 characters, or even 5, could ignore these restrictions and be whitelisted so players can use them freely. It’s disappointing that I can’t use my real name, “matt,” as my display name, and the same issue applies to users like @sthfrnce, who has to use two “o”s instead of one.
I would really appreciate any responses or insight into whether something could be done about this.
