Hello! I’m making an fnaf fan game and I need some help.
I’m confused if I need permission or not, Although i’ve heard that I do, I’ve also heard that I do not.
I don’t know where to contact the creator.
My game is simi-original, it’s an free-roam fnaf game with mostly the same lore and has most of the same characters. My game will slowly become more of my own take on fnaf as my game’s story progresses. And currently, it’s really my own sorta take on fnaf. But i’m unsure if I need permission or not.
It’s an fnaf survival game. Where you’re trapped in the pizzeria and need to survive off of the left over pizza, water, and hide from the animatronics at night. The current characters are:
Freddy, Bonnie, chica, foxy, Mimic, ShadowFreddy, GoldenFreddy, GoldenBonnie (Sorta my own character I guess?) and the puppet. You also play as cassidy’s brother in the game
That’s because you do need permission, but everyone does not get or even ask for it. Since the original IP owner doesn’t seem to do anything about it, that’s why you have so many copies in Roblox, be they good or bad. Many of the copies here “claim” to have permission, but there is no way that Roblox would know if they did or not. There is no way to configure an experience with some “proof” of permission built in so the moderators know if this is true or not.
That’s also why I’m surprised that this isn’t abused more since really anyone could claim to be the IP owner, but maybe it is and we just don’t see it reported on the devforums as often?
Thanks. I guess i’ll just go for it, add a little note or something saying “I did not get permission to make this game, and scott, if you’re reading this, may I have permission to continue my game?” Or smth like that
I’m… more than fairly confident that Scott is perfectly okay with fan-games (pretty sure he’s said so before online), so I wouldn’t worry about it — there’s dozens of them on websites like GameJolt, etc.
(obviously not legal advice i am not a lawyer blah blah you’ve heard it)
Scott Cawthon has said numerous times that he’s okay with fan games; he encourages them., even. He just has a problem (justifiably) with people monetising their FNAF creations.
