I’ve been a dev for several years now and always used Blender to create meshes. Never, ever used the toolbox, but the project I’m working on right now is on a bigger scale. Like dystopian meets sci-fi. Frankly, I’m recreating something from a TV show, and as you know, the sets they build are full of clutter.
I feel it would take ages to model each tiny model, but I feel guilty for even looking at the toolbox. How do you guys do it? Specifically the bigger projects.
Over here on Roblox, making use of Toolbox assets has been generally frowned upon for being “lazy” amongst other reasons, though i think the opinion has died down in recent years.
I don’t think it’s inherently wrong, as there are many websites out there that make models avalaible for anyone’s taking to use in their own projects and it’s actually not an uncommon practice to use them.
Personally, i like making all of the assets i’ll use (though it’s mostly due to personal preference) i don’t see anything really wrong in getting models out of the toolbox as long as you’re making proper use of them and making stuff look coherent.
Well, if it’s a good model, you may as well use it.
The problem is that when you are making big maps, you probably want to optimize multiple models into a single object, and if it’s another mesh, it can be problematic.
People will hate for the sake of hate, but what matters is if the final result is good and if the final result can be easily tweaked.
Basically do what works if it produces good results and ignore blind hate.
For small or filler props that aren’t important like a coffee mug or furniture, It’s normal to use toolbox or free asset libraries like sketchfab since it would be an insane time investment to create a custom model for every single prop. but typically anything that is a large piece of a map or environment like a structure or is important/regularly being directly interacted with by players, I think you should make yourself.
