Extreme stuttering when opening panels in Studio

For the past 2 weeks or so there has been pretty extreme performance issues in the explorer and Studio in general whenever something is opened or filtered. Examples include:

  • Switching ribbon tabs
  • Opening a built-in plugin
  • Unfolding instance trees in the explorer (viewing an instance’s children)
  • Opening the insert object menu (this one is the worst)
  • Searching In the explorer
  • Searching in the insert object menu

In the video below, you can see I have to try multiple times to get the animation editor to open, and when it finally does, Studio locks up for about 2 seconds first. Then, I try to insert an instance in the explorer, and the insert menu takes 29 seconds to open. You can’t see it open because I was only recording Studio, but the moment my mouse goes over the + icon is when I clicked the insert button and Studio is totally frozen until the beach ball loading icon goes away. This video is taken in a brand new place I had just opened.

Studio Information:

I have “enable betas for upcoming features” enabled but otherwise no beta features enabled. This happens with next gen studio enabled and disabled.

System Information:

  • MacBook Air
  • M1 2020
  • 16GB RAM
  • Tahoe 26.1

I do not believe this is a problem with my system as every other app is running as usual, I am only having issues with studio and only for the past two weeks or so.

It turns out that this was actually an issue with OneDrive.

I’m using a custom icon set that I store in OneDrive so that I can sync my icons across devices. I did have “Always keep on this device” enabled for the directory, so in theory the files should have been readily accessible, but earlier today I discovered that something has gone amiss with my OneDrive setup and now all files in my OneDrive folder are exceptionally slow to access, whether they are available locally or not (I’m guessing it has something to do with the OneDrive process watching the files for changes but not sure).

It seems that Studio icons are loaded on demand and not at startup (makes sense), so when I opened something with previously unloaded icons, it would cause a big lag spike as Studio tried to load the icons in my custom icon directory, which apparently OneDrive is no longer cool with. This would also explain why the insert object menu (with its many many icons) was giving me the biggest issues.

Resetting to the default icons was no easy task, but did fix the issue for me. I am marking this report as “Solved”, but will hold off on marking it as “Fixed” until I hear back from the staff member that contacted me privately, as I think icon loading locking up the entire Studio process might still be considered a bug (I would have expected that to be done in a separate thread).

I’m going to close this one specifically on the icon loading problem. There’s no expectation that icons will load properly from remote storage with the latencies involved. Its possible this won’t be problematic in the future, but this will be a side effect and not a primary goal. It sounds like the setup you have of always keeping a local cache for that folder should work once OneDrive has had time to mount, so there is certainly a mystery there as to why this started happening. If these aren’t changing frequently I’d recommend just keeping a cache manually and not having onedrive get in the way.
