(Feedback) Horror Build

I have been working on a small little house that is supposed to be scary and a scene around it. I’m curious to hear opinions on what I can add to it. If you can also rate the build scene for 1-10 Also, I made everything myself but the GFX on the posters. Thanks!

It looks pretty good for your first attempt, I would definitely give it a higher rating with all things considered. One big thing that I would recommend to make a difference would be to add some fog effects (found in properties of lighting). This is an easy change that can make a scene seem much more realistic, especially if you do not have any background terrain. Just messing around with that for a bit can make a big difference. Music also makes a big difference, and really adds to the atmosphere of a game. The atmosphere really makes all the difference on whether a game is scary or not. Besides sounds and lighting, there is really not too much you can change besides the actual background. Depending on how far you want to go with it, you can even make a surrounding forest for a true immersive experience. Regardless, I would really focus on creating some nice fog and adding some eerie music, as that will go a long way and is relatively easy.

Good work so far! I particularly like the street light model, black skybox and spooky lighting. After walking around the game, here are some of my feedback and suggestions as to how it could be improved on further:

Overlapping Bricks

The bricks at the entrance of the worn-down house are overlapping in some areas. This creates an unwanted flickering effect. By combining these bricks using the Union tool or by changing their width slightly so that each part is a slightly different width, you should be able to avoid this effect.

Intense Bloom

The well-lit section of the map beneath the street light triggers an intense bloom filter. This makes the player’s character glow quite a lot, especially on higher graphics settings. As there doesn’t seem to be any in-game explanation for the effect, it feels unnecessary and distracts attention from the models in the game. I think reducing the effect would lead to a more immersive experience.

Brick Roof

The worn-down house’s roof appears to be built out of bricks. As real houses seldom use bricks as roofing material, this makes the roof stand out slightly. The use of the brick material elsewhere on the house also draws attention to this. It makes one wonder why the roof hasn’t fallen in on itself after what must be many years of neglect.

If I were to offer any suggestions, I think building a collapsed roof would fit well with the rest of the build. Alternatively, you could simply extend the wooden canopy to cover the entire roof.

Conclusion

I think you’ve done a good job with the build so far. Once again, I really like the street light model, the clever us of the black skybox and the spooky lighting. With a few minor changes, I think you’d have an awesome horror build ready to spook players just in time for Halloween.

Good luck with the project!
