After a year and a half of development, I’m opening up my “action” MMORPG as a beta.
I’m particularly looking for feedback on player retention and responsiveness in general and if the core mechanics are intuitive, I need to know: what’s broken, what’s confusing and what’s actually fun?
Any feedback at all is extremely valuable. Thanks in advance to anyone willing to try the game out and help me improve it.
I played for a good half hour and would say the base is really solid.
- Good basic combat (responsive, understandable)
- Challenging and impressive AI (though I might just have a skill issue)
- Basic exploration rewarding (with chests and secrets abound)
- Good graphics
That being said, there are some problems…
- Lack of AI move prediction (I couldn’t tell that a bird was going to peck until it hit me)
- Giant fields of nothing (no paths, no enemies, not even loot, I was just running through empty plains most the time)
- General confusion on where I am and where I am going (could be resolved with paths between towns or by what is mentioned below)
- Pretty pricy items considering chest density and enemy difficulty (I eventually bought an axe thinking I could sell wood back for profit, but apparently not!)
Though the biggest offender is no quest markers. I picked up a quest to deliver mail to a town I had no knowledge of, and no semblance of an idea where it could be. And another quest to defeat “rootkin” of which I had no idea what they looked like (I think I found one, but it kicked my butt). If you add one thing, please add quest markers.
There are a bunch of other QoL and polish things I could mention, but this feels like enough for now.
Good luck on development!
In all honesty I did feel like the cost of items was a bit outrageous, so I increased the cash gain on a lot of stuff (I also made it so you can sell most things you can find in chests).
I don’t really feel like adding quest markers, but I’ve made sure of making the quest “hints” outright tell you what to do in case its not clear enough
The landmarks part I’m still trying to get a hang of. I’ve added some decoration here and there so its easier to identify points of interest.
Thanks for the feedback! Sorry for the late response though… I’ve been so busy to the point I’ve just decided to release the game as a full of open beta in hopes of getting more feedback from people.
Looks like it has potential! My biggest problem was “finding the fun”. It’s said to be an action MMORPG, but I couldn’t find any action, even when I was practically begging for it. I scanned probably 5 mins of just running through the map to try to find anyone to fight or an NPC to give me a quest where it didn’t just say I didn’t have the money. I think the primary thing you should do for a new player is onboarding focus. You should waypoint to at least the first NPC which has a quest that has enemies around so the player can get into the fun immediately instead of wondering where to go.
I’ve made sure of adding enough mob spawns to eventually stumble upon something after roughly 5 minutes of holding w. Also from my logs it shows that you died to the environment (presumably to fall damage)
I gotta ask… Did you play through the tutorial or not?
Also if its any better I’ve made it so new characters spawn inside the starter town (I really don’t want to add handholding in the form of waypoints.)
