Feedback on Animation

Hey! I wanted to make a sword-slash animation inspired by Bloodborne. I’d like to hear some feedback on how I could improve this and make it look more like Bloodborne.

  • Looks perfect the way it is.
  • Needs some tweaking.

Cheers!

Very nicely done animation.

I don’t have much to say about it, but here are a few things that might improve it. Take these with a grain of salt, because the animation is already really good and there’s no guarantee that what I say is 100% true. I’m not an animation expert and certainly could never make something as good as this.

  • In the windup, you might benefit from angling the sword back a little more to achieve a more arced slash. The current animation feels a bit more like a “chop” which might fit more on a hammer or axe type weapon as opposed to a sword. I’m not saying the animation doesn’t fit the sword, but if you’d like to lean more into the style a sword would have when swinging, then doing this might help a little bit.
  • Along with the first piece of advice, a little bit more follow-through on the end part of the swing might sell the swing slightly more. The arm bounces back pretty quickly and doesn’t have much “recovery” time if that makes sense. For a single animation like this one, it’s not a big deal, but if you want to chain attack animations together (like in a Bloodborne sense, because you can chain attacks), a slightly longer pause might ease the motion between swings more and give the sword a bit more weight in the animation.
  • I’m not an expert on Bloodborne animation, but if you want to lean into the more energetic combat you could make the torso twist to the side more in both the windup and followup. This could add more power to the animation and make it a bit more snappy or fluid.

Hey, thank you so much for the excellent feedback! I’ll make sure to incorporate these. I also haven’t played it, but I was asked to create something similar to it.

  • That’s a fantastic point. I was going for the weapon “Saw Cleaver” from Bloodborne look, hence, the downwards smash. I’ll make sure to add a little more horizontal movement to it to sell that sword swing.
  • Good point, I’ll add a longer pause to its end.
  • I’ll incorporate that with the more horizontal movement.

Thank you again for the great ideas. Have a great week.
