Feedback on WinterTree Assets (V1 + V2)

So I made this winter tree and I would appreciate your thoughts!
I made two versions of it, one with UnionOperations (unions) and another with models for more customization!

The original WinterTree asset, on the left, is one I personally like more, and someone pointed out that in their opinion, the snow gaps between the branches are “ugly”, and they suggested I fill them with snow.

Hyperlink-Quote for context:

The tree itself looks nice, but the gaps between the snow make it look a bit ugly. If you cover the gaps with snow too i think it’ll look better, other than that… good work! (To clarify, only the vertical gaps make it look bad, the horizontal ones are fine!)

I remade them into a separate asset and they really liked it which is always a dub! So now I have two assets, and I uploaded them four individual times to separate the ones made with unions and models.

These were my original thoughts from the other post:

I personally like the one with the gaps a lot more, but that’s just my own taste.
The one I just edited reminds me of a stack of birdies from like badminton or something lol

Here are their links in the creator store if you would like to check them out:

Version [ 2 ]:
Tadachiiryu’s - [V2] WinterTree
[Unions] Tadachiiryu’s - [V2] WinterTree

Note:
I know four different submissions might be a bit, but in my defense I did it that way so if someone wants unions, it’s already made in that way so they don’t have to edit it, and vice versa if they want models instead of unions to customize it easier.

I would really like some feedback on my winter tree, so I made a generalized questionnaire for posts like this, sort of like how Roblox does:

  1. Does this style visually satisfy you, and look like the desired object, or does it look like something else?
  2. Based on the amount of components and/or building materials used (e.g. mesh, parts, unions, etc.) do you think this asset would be heavy or easier to run? (if applicable, i.e. lost of parts)
  3. What type of building style does this fit? (e.g. simulator, studs/inlets, blocky, etc.) (What style does this make you think of?)
  4. Would you personally use this asset, or recommend asset use to a friend or developer?
  5. Other thoughts or feedback not covered in any of the previous questions?

Thank you for taking the time to read my post! Feel free to say anything, even if it’s blunt or harsh!

I think the small difference between them just makes them different style trees. The shape of the leaves could be improved a little, maybe flared out more as it gets toward the bottom, but at the end of the day it really depends on what the rest of the game looks like. Hard to give feedback otherwise.

I see, thank you for your input, I’ll keep note of that

Would you say they look visually appealing?

It’s okay too if you say if you personally like them or not, or something else, I welcome all feedback!

I’d say they’re both in a way unpleasant.

The gaps in the snow on the first one don’t look good, and the more obvious shape of the second one also doesn’t look good.

Personally I think the overall silhouette of the trees just isn’t the best. It could be the harsh edges, weirdly rounded top, near perfect cone shape, etc.

Personally I’d just get a good shape for the trees and then change the color of the leaves instead of adding a separate snow layer on top.

When you say unpleasant, do you think it could be the lighting that makes you feel some of this?

Here’s a screenshot of the other side that has light:

Sometimes the absence of light has psychological tricks on us that makes us perceive things differently. I bring up that point to try and guess and what you mean in that way.

Also the other guy has that exact same thoughts that the gaps didn’t look good, which I completely get, sometimes nature irl doesn’t look good, hence why I made it that way!

Take this image of this winter tree for example:

This tree has gaps, it’s uneven, and it doesn’t look good. I completely get what you mean, and I wanted to point out that I’m not upset or offended or anything, I actually appreciate that you called it that because it’s actually not supposed to look perfect! It’s supposed to be “real” or “realistic”, so thank you!

plus it doesn’t help with the fact that these are all base parts and not a mesh, plus if I were to make it look visually more pleasing using edited or curved Unions like how branches would look, it would become way more heavy and taxing on our systems, especially with like hundreds of trees.

One tree alone has 195 parts, so if they were all unions I honestly wouldn’t be able to image the triangle count..

When you mention the “silhouette”, what do you mean exactly? Do you mean the shape of their shadows, the overall shape of the tree, or do you mean silhouette as in the silhouette of the tree when it’s dark out and you can’t make out any details?

(I ask because I’ve found many people have different definitions of silhouette based on context or when speaking about details in a specific manor.)

Also the weirdly rounded top is definitely a thing haha, I think it’s weird too but I didn’t want to keep going, nor make is a union as I didn’t want the model to become too taxing, especially at 195 parts.. I think it’s crazy how I added that many parts and I made it!

I see, I’ll take note of your opinion, thank you for sharing!

I personally feel like it’s a good shape, and I really like how it has a separate snow top.. but that just leaves me more ways to make trees how other people would like to see them! (Not just trees either but really anything else I make.)

Edit:
I forgot to add this, but here’s a tree made up of only the colour black to show the silhouette of the tree!

I’ve also included screenshots with lighting at 4.30, 5.30 and 6.30 here:

Lighting Set: 04:30

Lighting Set: 05:30

Lighting Set: 06:30

Note: Honestly I have no idea why 5.30 is darker than 4.30 but that’s just roblox for you..

Respectfully I don’t really see what you mean, I feel the silhouette looks exactly like how a tree would, especially at night. I’m trying to imagine what you mean, it’s just hard for me to picture it. Could you elaborate? Thanks!

No, I feel it’s almost entirely the general shape of them.

I’m just not a fan of it, they’re too “perfect” to feel natural.

And again, the curve at the top when everything else is a sharp edge just looks off.

A real tree does look good, because it isn’t perfect. It’s not identical across all faces, unlike the one you made.

When you take only the shape of the tree, it just doesn’t look right, especially when compared to a real one.

The rounded top just looks very wrong.

If you were to then also draw lines to show the curve of the tree:

As I said, yours is just nearly perfect. It doesn’t look good because it’s nearly perfect.

It also just doesn’t have enough variance in shape, it could maybe be fine being perfect if the top at least looked notably different to the bottom, for example, if the bottom stuck out a lot more.

I can point at it and say “well that’s a tree”, but it also just looks off.

For a model this simple, I wouldn’t really be worrying about tri counts. On modern hardware, you can easily get away with 30k, even 40k tris per model.

Each part only has 12 tris (2 per face), so that means each tree is only around 2k tris with 195 parts.

Your max amount of triangles per rendered game scene is around 11-12 million for modern game engines for a 60fps target. Mobile devices should be able to get away with a million triangles.

I see, thank you for your input, I’ll make sure to keep this in mind! I might actually make a few more versions then to see what I can alter and put as separate listings!

I see your point and I understand what you’re trying to convey, I guess that’s just where we differ in our opinions about that.

For example the screenshot I sent you, I feel that tree didn’t look good. I didn’t like the colours, the uneven surfaces, or how some snow levels were way higher than others when they sat on branches compared to other branches that didn’t have a flick of snow.

Take this zoomed in screenshot of the one I sent you earlier, but notice these branches don’t have anything and they look bland? It honestly reminds me of a skeleton, I don’t feel like there’s any flavour in that, and the tree just doesn’t look good.

That’s more what I mean. Don’t get me wrong, I think trees can be absolutely beautiful and stunning even, just not all of them..

I’ll have to push back a little on this: You’re comparing a tree made out of blocks in a 3D rendered environment to a real tree, I do appreciate your criticism but in my personal opinion these two can’t really be compared when you’re showing one style of how a tree can look compared to an entirely different style.

My tree is more of a cone shape, and the example you gave has branches that go every which way, these visual styles clash 100%. You gave an example of a tree that has branches like this, yet I deliberately chose not to make the tree that way. I feel like you’re missing that point.

I’ll likely go back and make even more trees and I might even combine them all into a bigger model as a free bundle, but again they would be different designs, have different styles, and more importantly be rendered in Roblox Studio.

This was just one design I chose to go with just frankly because I liked it. I did mention in my previous comment that it does leave me with more ways to make trees, especially if I were to make some for other people as well.

Also don’t misunderstand me as getting defensive or anything, I’m not. I’m bluntly stating that comparing these two things with very obvious differences in how branches are isn’t the most efficient. It’s like comparing two cookie shapes and saying one looks less like a cookie when they’re still both cookies.

Also yes, you’ve brought up the rounded top, and I appreciate you saying that, maybe in different deigns I’ll rework that. We shall see.

I was honestly thinking about making the top stick out a bit more as well, but the design and the overall shape of the tree made it limited without sacrificing the details by making it too small or making it impossible huge.

The tree is around the same size as the player, just a little taller, which I like a lot and I think it works well knowing that you’re not walking around a map where all of the trees are titans, I do also think the trees could look nice with some being smaller than the others.

I really appreciate that! I actually had no idea, I hadn’t looked into it in a bit and last I heard like 20k was a lot? And now you’re saying 11-12M is for modern games?

That’s crazyyyyy! Man have the times changed!

P.S.
Don’t let that super long pushback get under your skin or anything, I can be very blunt. I just try to separate comparing realism to roblox in a way that feels intentional.

Like my designs are meant to have realistic details such as the snow and maybe a way lighting hits it, but not necessarily look like an actual tree. More so look like something expected of Roblox if that makes sense?

But yeah I do thank you for taking the time to reply! I truly appreciate you, and you’ve given me a lot to think about in terms of how other people perceive things.

I have different tastes that clash with so many people, so honestly this post was a reminder of that, I’m not upset or anything with you.

I also wanted to mention that I have HFA, and if I was rude or if my pushback was a little too hard then I’d like to apologize, sometimes I go over the top with debates and what not!
