Feedback | Zombie Havoc

A while back I started developing a game called ‘Zombie Havoc’, and partially finished it. It didn’t really take off (It didn’t make too much in sales, game time was relatively low at around 7-12m and would like some feedback and opinions in regards to why. People do play it occasionally, it’s just not in the quantity that I had hoped.

Any feedback/opinions appreciated

Your UI is great, I love that your projectiles are actually projectiles (and not fake tracers). Overall seems well made, loved the intro

  • the music during the round kills the mood, makes it sound like a cheesy RPG game or something. I’d suggest removing it.
  • This game is incredibly similar to Zombie Attack. Their game has more developers, resources, It seems they have stolen all your would-be players.

however, I would add that your game was fun and would get more players if there were at least a full server online.

True, the music can be a bit cheesy at times. Thank you for the feedback.

The loading screen and loading music are EXTREMELY off-putting, and made me want to leave the game. Those first few seconds of loading are crucial, and you slightly managed to ruin it. It also doesn’t really themeatically fit the game.

The gameplay, however, was a really nice experience. I especially like the interfaces, and the projectile system. It did get a little boring after a while though, possibly lacking in intensity.

Nice work but please change the loading screen!!! Even if it’s just the music

Edit: I like the challenges/missions thing too, but ‘stay in-game for 5 minutes’ is a bit of a weird inclusion. Gives it a bit of an over-marketed tone.

+1 to this.

Also wanted to add that mission completed and level up notifications being in the center of the screen is REALLY intrusive when I’m trying to shoot and it gets in the way.

Heal up dialog forces me to go out of first person to click. Needs a custom hotkey based solution.

I wonder who made that thumbnail

Jokes aside though:

I think this is the main element that is killing your player count and game time (on top of the things other people have already suggested). Most people interested in the game may already have experience in or know of Zombie Attack, so it’d be in your best interest to differentiate yourself from them entirely to give players something else/more to enjoy than the alternative, so that they don’t just think “why play the same game”

That is not to say your game is just a clone of Zombie Attack; it has its quirks and strengths and I enjoy it more but fundamentally its the same experience for the average player (i.e. join, point and click until you level up enough to get better guns).

There are a few ways you can differentiate the game, such as:

  • More powerups, in particular ones that are significantly different from those already existing in ZA, e.g. (keep in mind im just spitballing here)

    • Portal Gun
    • Powerful but temporary weapon (similar to ray gun in COD Zombies)
    • Higher jump force / lower gravity
    • The ability to head stomp on zombies to deal significant damage (guess where I got my inspiration for that idea)
    • Special abilities for weapons triggered by hotkeys
    • Modifiers you can attach to your weapon to upgrade it (if you’ve ever played Survive the Disasters 2, that’s the kind of thing I mean)
    • Temporary damage booster
    • Sentry that deals damage either until it gets destroyed or until it despawns after 10-30 seconds
  • Emotes, skins, other cosmetics

  • Maybe more incentive to play as a zombie; as is there’s little reason to zombify yourself unless the only remaining player(s) is/are afk or new and you want to restart the match. Honestly, I’m a bit iffy on this point and how you would even fix it, but I figured it had to at least be mentioned.

Side question, have you tried advertising the game that much recently? It might just be that not enough people know about it.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for sharing you feedback, I appreciate it

The match cooldown is way too long that is why some people are leaving without even trying the game.
Maybe do something like Zombie Rush where you spawn as a zombie when you die.

Gamepass sales are underwhelming, I suggest you change up the prices.

There is a well known case study, the “J.C Penney’s Effect” that shows pricing your game passes at nice, multiple of 5 numbers will make them more easy to be gauged and thus less often purchased.

Something like 399 r$ has a much lower psychological weight than 400 r$, even though they only actually differ by a negligible amount.

You might argue that to change prices like this is manipulating your playerbase, but that’s another aspect of the JC Penney Effect. When JC Penney decided to stop these practices and give “fair” and “real” prices, their sales and stocks dropped dramatically.

Just click on any front page game, and you’ll see this put into practice. As driving gamepass sales will improve your player retention and give you more money to put in ads/future games I think changing your gamepasses prices is worth a shot. Good luck

I have that option, I need to improve it though.

@Lawnmovver I shall try that if I decide to revamp the game.

Thanks for the feedback

Does anyone have any feedback/ideas regarding increasing game-retention?

I’ve forgotten the name, but I played a game that had a good system of rewards for staying in game for longer. It had a timer than counts down and you get a certain reward at the end of that timer, then the timer resets to a higher amount and the reward for that is even higher, so on so forth.

I think it was called Build a Fort or Fort Wars or something, it basically rewarded you with loot crates (main method of getting weapons) at 5 minutes, then 30 minutes, then an hour, then two hours, with the crates increasing in rarity each time.

Edit - Found the game: Base Raiders 🧱 - Roblox
