Very frequently when I am building something with the studio draggers, I find myself having to switch to and from a half-increment in the move draggers. For example, if I am building with dragger increment = 1, then I often need to switch to increment = 0.5 and back.
The reason this happens is parts are centered around their position, and parts may have a size that is either an even or odd multiple of the increment. In scenarios that involve odd-multiples of the increment, I often need to go down a half-increment to get the desired end result:
- With a part that has a whole-multiple position, and an odd-multiple size along some axis, the edges of the part will be at half-multiple coordinates instead of whole-multiple coordinates. This means aligning or resizing other parts relative to this part requires using half-multiple increments.
- To resize an odd-multiple part to an adjacent even-multiple size (e.g. adding +1 or -1) while keeping the part centered, requires using half-multiple increments.
The geometric-aware snapping is helpful for resolving this problem, but it can be a bit slow or flakey sometimes, in comparison to me just doing it myself directly if I already know exactly what I need. And it also doesn’t work for parts that aren’t touching other parts (e.g. because they don’t exist yet, or you are doing this half-increment correction before moving the part into place, or because the part being edited isn’t intended to perfectly touch other parts).
So, I end up experiencing this as friction in the building process, as it’s like “ohh this part is phase shifted again, I need to switch to a half increment or otherwise do something special to resolve this” and that takes some thinking and clicking and some typing. Given how commonly it shows up, it would be really nice if we could have some kind of quick modifier that’s lets us snap to half increments instead of full increments so it can be an easy, low-friction adjustment.
