I’ve recently wondered, in which direction am I supposed to tilt my headshots? I’ve prepared two examples. When voting please do not judge the artwork itself, judge the format that has been used (what would be left or right).
We naturally read left to right, top to bottom. This, of course, changes with language, and if you were a Arabic speaker you’d read right to left, top to bottom.
The more important feature is the profile itself, not the words. So of course you’d like it to be the last thing you see, like a last impression/imprint.
Therefore, the best location for the logo would be the bottom right corner, and the headshot therefore should face the left as to make it not look awkward.
Another argument would be that you’d see the face first, and using the logic above, you’d place the headshot to face the left.
It’s not like I like the left cheek better. I believe in the equality of cheeks.
I think the main reason why most people chose left is because it just looks more in compliance with how righties perceive the world. Even though it’s featuring the left cheek, sometimes that’s how it works–it’s opposite. However, at the same time it’s not. From the perspective of someone standing in front of the person, it looks like their right side is exposed, while that’s the left side for the person themselves. So, my theory is people’s dominant hand plays a role from a third-person perspective.
