Help with Core Mechanics of a Game

Sorry for the weird title; let me explain. I’m a bit of a history/worldbuilding nerd, so I thought it would be fun to create a game in a world based off of the early to late 4th century Roman Empire. Players would participate in lore accurate battles.
Everything is all well and good except for two things. One, I’m very bugged about my game’s glaring similarities to Centaura. My game (currently named Carrion) drops players into battles between kingdoms and nations. Players must wear down the enemies’ numbers in order to win the battle. My current plan is for the battles to progress in a campaign-like style – once again, glaringly similar to Centaura. I do plan to add some level of NPCs to sort of flesh out that large-scale battle vibe from Antiquity, but that’s all still up in the air.
I guess what I’m trying to ask is this: is there a way you could see to make the gameplay more original while sticking to a battle system. I’m really sorry if this has been confusing but I would love to hear any thoughts. I value all of your feedback so please don’t hold back. Thank you!
