Hiring for NXBOTs | Environment Builder / Level Designer, Playtesters, and a Character Animator

Project Brief

NXBOTs is a multiplayer horror game being developed in Roblox. The game brings together playable monsters and entities inspired by different horror universes, including FNaF, SCP, the Backrooms, as well as original and fan-created creatures.

Unlike games where the monster is controlled by AI, the monsters in NXBOTs are played by real players. This gives monster players freedom in how they approach a round—they can aggressively hunt survivors, stalk players from the darkness, set up scares, or simply mess around.

Survivors play through different objectives such as hiding, surviving, escaping, collecting items, or completing tasks while avoiding the monster.

The game is also built around player-hosted servers. Hosts can customize their games with different maps, monsters, objectives, modifiers, round settings, and other options to create anything from a normal horror match to a chaotic custom session.

The project is primarily being made for fun, with an emphasis on player freedom, replayability, horror, and creating memorable moments with friends.

We are currently looking for people interested in helping with areas such as building, animation, and playtesting as development progresses.

As a Environment Builder / Level Designer, for NXBOTs, you will help design and build the maps used during gameplay.

Builders will primarily be responsible for **level design, environment assembly, and creating playable map layouts** using assets provided by the project. You are **not required to model your own assets or detailed props**. A collection of assets will be provided for you to use when creating environments.

Your work may include:

  • Designing and building complete playable maps.
  • Using provided assets to create rooms, hallways, structures, outdoor areas, and other environments.
  • Creating layouts that work well for both survivors and player-controlled monsters.
  • Designing areas for chases, hiding, objectives, exploration, and encounters.
  • Placing props and environmental details to make areas feel complete and believable.
  • Working with lighting and atmosphere to create an effective horror environment.
  • Keeping maps reasonably optimized for gameplay.
  • Making revisions based on feedback and playtesting.
  • Collaborating with other builders and developers when multiple people are working on the same map.

Maps should prioritize gameplay, atmosphere, and level design. They should be visually interesting while still being enjoyable to navigate and providing both monsters and survivors with different ways to approach situations.

Depending on the project, you may be responsible for an entire map or work alongside other
builders on individual areas of a larger map.

As a Playtester for NXBOTs, you will help test the game throughout development and provide feedback that helps improve gameplay, balancing, maps, monsters, UI, and other systems.

Playtesters will be invited to development testing sessions where new and existing features can be tested before they are released publicly.

Your work may include:

  • Participating in scheduled or requested playtesting sessions.
  • Testing maps as both survivors and monsters.
  • Testing different monsters, abilities, objectives, gamemodes, and modifiers.
  • Finding bugs, exploits, broken mechanics, and unexpected behavior.
  • Testing maps for problematic areas, such as getting stuck, unreachable locations, unfair hiding spots, or areas monsters cannot access.
  • Providing feedback on monster and survivor balancing.
  • Providing feedback on whether gameplay is fun, confusing, frustrating, too easy, or too difficult.
  • Testing UI and reporting usability issues.
  • Reproducing bugs when possible and explaining how they occurred.
  • Providing screenshots, videos, or other information when useful for bug reports.
  • Retesting issues after they have been fixed.

Playtesters are expected to provide useful and honest feedback. You do not need professional QA experience, but you should be willing to actively look for problems and explain what could be improved.

As a Character Animator for NXBOTs, you will create smooth character animations for the game’s main human player model.

The character model and rig are already provided. The rig is a **blocky humanoid rig similar to Roblox R15**, so you will not be responsible for creating or rigging the character.

For now, this position is focused specifically on the human player character. You will not be expected to animate the game’s monsters or entities.

Your work may include animations such as:

  • Idle
  • Walking
  • Running
  • Sprinting
  • Crouching / crouch movement
  • Climbing
  • Injured movement
  • Other player movement or gameplay animations as needed

The animations currently requested will primarily be looping animations and should transition naturally during gameplay.

We are looking for animation that feels smooth and polished while still fitting the blocky proportions and movement style of the character.

The exact animations, references, and intended behavior will be discussed before each animation is started.

Compensation

Compensation differs depending on the role you are applying for. Please read the section for your role before applying.

Environment Builder / Level Designer

Builders are compensated through a shared 40% revenue share allocated to the building team.

  • The 40% is shared between all builders; it is not 40% per builder.
  • How the 40% is divided will depend on the number of builders and their contributions to the project.
  • This is currently a revenue-share position, meaning there is no guaranteed upfront payment.
  • Earnings depend on the revenue generated by NXBOTs and are therefore not guaranteed to have a specific monetary value.

The exact revenue-share arrangement will be discussed and agreed upon before work begins.

Character Animator

Animators are paid per completed animation.

  • Standard looping animations will generally pay around $4–$6 USD per animation, depending on complexity and quality.
  • More complex or specialized animations may have a higher individually negotiated price.
  • Pricing will always be discussed and agreed upon before an animation is commissioned.
  • Rates may be negotiated depending on experience, portfolio quality, and the complexity of the requested animation.
  • Reasonable revisions to meet the agreed-upon direction should be included with the commissioned animation.

You will only be paid after you finish all animations, I do not want a non completed animation set for any character. If you fail to finish even a single animation I cannot pay you unless you do it.

Playtester

Playtesting is a volunteer position and is not financially compensated.

  • Playtesters will not receive guaranteed Robux, revenue share, or monetary payment for testing.
  • Active contributors will be recognized and credited in-game for helping test and improve NXBOTs.
  • Playtesters will receive access to development playtests and unreleased content when needed for testing.

This position is intended for people who are interested in the project and want to contribute feedback and testing during development.
