What do you want to achieve? Keep it simple and clear!
I want to make a cone that kind of fades out with transparency in blender, kind of like this:
-
What is the issue? Include screenshots / videos if possible!
I just cant understand how to do this (well probably because im very new at blender
This is the best ive done. Just a regular cone with no specialness
-
What solutions have you tried so far? Did you look for solutions on the Creator Hub?
Honestly, nothing. Because i have no idea.
This might be a billboard GUI (from the rivals screenshot). If it’s just an image, it’s just partially transparent.
No, its a mesh, heres a video showing
Also sorry if late responses im playing rivals
To me, it almost looks the forcefield material.
Here are the steps:
-
Open the blender software and add a cone, add a material to it, and name it whatever you want.
-
Open any editing software and add a gradient from 0% opacity to 100% opacity. It should be completely white.
-
Import the image to Blender and apply it to the cone, including the alpha map.
-
Open the UV Editing panel and click any one of the axes on the top right of your viewport to snap your camera to that axis.
-
After that, go to edit mode (if you aren’t already) and then press U >
Project From View (Bounds) -
It should look like this:
-
Import the mesh to the studio. You may see that it doesn’t have any transparency. Don’t worry, just add a
SurfaceAppearanceand set theColorMapof theSurfaceAppearanceto the gradient image. -
Set
AlphaModetoTransparencyand you’re done.
To change the color, change the color of the SurfaceAppearance. Also, I recommend right-clicking your mesh in Blender and setting Shade Smooth. Also, delete the flat face of the cone. And also, ensure that the imported mesh in studio has its DoubleSided property set to true.

Made a gradient, just gotta make a cone now and do the other steps
Lol idk how or where to import the image…
Ive made my cone
Ive made my gradient
Idk how to get them together..
Okay.
I dont know how to import the image into blender can you tell me?
First, go to your Materials tab. You should see something like this:
Next, click ‘New’, and under Surface > Base Color, click the yellow circle and select ‘Image texture’ from the menu that pops up.
From there, press ‘New’, and import the image.
Theres a problem, i cant get it to glow. Is there a way to do it without the surface appearance because i found a mesh in the toolbox that didnt have a texture id, didnt have a surface appearance, nothing, but it still fades out, and also glowed. Also whats this weird line at the top of the mesh?
There’s a better way to do this other than using textures. You can use vertex coloring on the mesh and erase the alpha on the vertices you don’t want. This is preferable as baked vertex coloring has no resolution (the gradient is lossless) and you can use materials like Neon with it.
First, in Blender create a white Color Attribute under the mesh’s Data tab.
To see the alpha, add a material to the mesh and apply a Color Attribute to it. You’ll also have to set the Blend Mode to Alpha Blend and tick Backface Culling under the material options to view the transparency with EEVEE.
Next, go to Vertex Paint mode and set the brush’s blend mode to Erase Alpha.
Then just paint the vertices you want invisible (note: Set Vertex Colors might not paint the alpha in some versions).
Finally, import the mesh as an FBX and it should have the vertex coloring baked in. You’ll have to set the MeshPart.Transparency to something over zero to see the effect, though.
Im stuck at step 2 i have no idea what to do (the adding material and applying color attribute) (sorry im not that good at blender lol)
For their step 2 and forwards:
Go to your shading tab, and re-open your materials tab. You screen should look like this, with your cone in the viewport display.
In your materials tab, locate ‘Settings’. The following steps will vary depending on what version of Blender you have, as it was changed not too long ago.
– If you see a field labelled ‘Blend Mode’, change it to Alpha Blend. Above it, make sure the Backface Culling field is checked.
– If you don’t see the ‘Blend Mode’ field, then you will see one called ‘Render Method’. Change it to Blended. Then make sure all three above boxes under ‘Backface Culling’ are checked.
After that, we’re gonna focusing on the bit at the bottom with the boxes. These are nodes. We can change aspects of textures + materials with them.
First, click in the grey area to make sure none of the default nodes are selected. Then, right click the grey area, and navigate through Add > Input > Color Attribute. If you can’t find it, enter it into the ‘Find’ searchbar.
Your setup should now look like this, with the added Color attribute node:
On the Color Attribute node, drag the ‘Color’ dot to the ‘Base Color’ dot on the Principled BSDF node. They will connect. Do the same connecting both Alpha dots. In the dark grey field on the bottom, click it and select your white color attribute. It should now resemble the image for the second step.
Thanks lol, the problem was mostly the settings being different.
IT WORKED! I wish i could do multiple solutions… Because multiple different people helped me.
Whos post should i mark as the solution?
Thanks to everyone who helped me, ive already created 3 things with this!
I would mark a post as a solution but idk what post to do!
The meshes look great!
I’d mark index_self’s post solution since they gave the base steps. Anyone with a similar issue would likely refer to that one.
