I’ve been making my own kind of obby game and it has brought this question to my mind: How do obby creators come up with stage ideas? Obby games like LONGEST SUPER FUN OBBY have over 900 STAGES! I cannot fathom how someone could come up with 900 unique stage ideas.
To the stage builders out there, where do you get your ideas? Do you have a process?
Thank you all and have a good morning, good evening, and good night!
Yeah, mega fun obbies have over 900 stages but they are ALL boring as hell. If you are going to build an obby, please don’t make a generic easy garbage obby.
To make an obby stage you have to take into consideration various things: Difficulty, Punishment, Length, Purism, etc. First you have to aim for a Difficulty: Easy, Medium, Hard, Difficult, Challenging… Let’s say that the hardest obby you have beaten is a Hard obby. DON’T build a Challenging obby if your hardest is a hard obby, the difficulty is gonna be innacurate. Now for Punishment, it really depends on the difficulty. You can make your obby easier but punishing with kill bricks and void, or you can be less punishing, but make your obby harder. Or just add some sections that are punishing and then reward the player by adding a safety net. Remember that too much punishment can make your obby unenjoyable, so be careful with that. Lenght also depends on the difficulty, it kinda works like Punishment. Now, Purism. A Purist obby is when an obby doesn’t have any client objects (kill bricks, moving platforms, spinning platforms, etc) and the difficulty is raw. Purist gameplay is generally used in way higher difficulties like Extreme, Terrifyng… but you can still make a purist obby in lower difficulties, it’s just hard to make them actually fun, so I recommend you to use more client objects in lower difficulties like Hard. And lastly, some design tips. AVOID making your obby repetitive, don’t add a bunch of platforms at the same distance, try to be creative and add different jumps. Also AVOID making a walking simulator, it’s repetitive and boring to have to walk too much for the next jump. If you are not sure how to make your gameplay varied, I recommend you to play other obbies to learn from them, but good ones, don’t go and play MEGA EASY OBBY or Tower of Hell, you should play tiered obbies, SOME difficulty chart obbies, and Eternal Towers of Hell. Hopefully this is useful for you :)
