How far is too far when taking inspiration?

Hello!

I am writing a semi-futuristic story game, and am currently revisiting the beginning part of the story to further build the main character and set the tone for the rest of the game. I am a big fan of how Firewatch builds it’s main character, Henry, before the gameplay begins. Firewatch uses a text based sequence, often giving the player only one choice, or two equally bad choices to both tell the story of Henry and make the player feel as if they made that choice. (Won’t link here because the game contains some mature themes)

I would love to take inspiration, and implement that medium of storytelling into my game. However, since I haven’t seen it anywhere else, or at least not in that manner, I’m wondering if it would be going too far to do so? Just looking for some input.

Thanks!

In my opinion, there is no problem to use it. You will violate copyright only when your characters and arts are same as those of firewatch.
