It is a lot of unnecessary effort for a sadly small amount of players. And if those few players you attract do not enjoy the game, you lost your only community.
I feel #bulletin-board is better, though still rough to use. The bulletin board attracts developers, which would give you feedback, so definitely better.
I have never had a game with a lot of playera, but I think if you can get your friends to join, then you can get there friend to, and this (I think) will help get players into your game.
If you think your game is good, and players will come back again to enjoy it, then it is just a matter of time untill you get a lot of players playing at the same time.
Something every important is to make it so your game it playable with only a few players. This can be hard, but if you can do this, it will make is easy your players to play.
Again, I have never had my games get big, but I think this can help.
