How to visit Discourse links without the click counter denouncing you

I found this out some time ago and wanted to share with those who want that extra bit of anonymity.

As you may know, there is a small counter which is shown besides links that represents the amount of clicks it has had. Whenever you click any link, the counter goes up, and while that is a nice little shorthand to link analytics (wow), some might not feel too comfortable with seeing the counter going up when they click it.

As such, you can avoid that by doing the following (which should work on most major browsers):
It doesn’t work on Edge because Edge is bad

  1. Locate the link you want to open anonymously;
  2. Hover your mouse over it;
  3. Press, and keep pressed the main mouse button (usually, left);
  4. Drag the link to the tab bar or to the address bar;
  5. Release;
  6. Feast on your link that you’ve opened anonymously without leaving any traces.

You can try on the following link:

Happy privacy

I’m actually impressed Edge behaves differently. In a good way.

Doesn’t right-click work? I’m on mobile and holding the link (to imitate right click) gives me few options, one of which is to open that link in a new tab or copy it. It shouldn’t affect the counter.

Opening in new tab made the counter go up when I did it in chrome on computer. I don’t remember if it was the right click or if it was pressing open in new tab, though.

Simply do right click, copy link, put it in a note pad or somewhere (not in the url)
And then copy/past it in a new url.
Boom no counter
