HTTP 429 Causes Assets to Fail Loading, Making it Impossible to Keep Working

A ton of my assets are failing to load during studio playtests with “HTTP 429 (Too Many Requests)” errors.

What I’m seeing:

  • Textures, meshes, animations, sounds, fonts… basically everything throws HTTP 429. It’s not the same assets failing each time either, it’s random from session to session.
  • It seems specifically tied to when a lot of assets try to load at the same time.
  • Even stuff that DOES load successfully sometimes gets unloaded again a few seconds later. I actually watched textures disappear and models turn grey right in front of me mid playtest seconds after it had already rendered fine.
  • Vulkan vs Direct3D makes a difference. On Vulkan more stuff loads initially but some things still unload during play, on Direct3D the same thing happens but significantly less things load initially.
  • This isn’t just my project’s assets either, studio’s own internal plugin toolbar icons and built in font families are failing with the exact same 429 error, in the same session, before my game has even started running. Two examples from my console:
“Font family rbxassetid://12187365977 failed to load: HTTP 429 (Too Many Requests)”
“Unable to load plugin icon: rbxassetid://4521972465”
Both of those fired at studio startup, before my own place code runs. (Does not happen every time).
  • Sometimes Roblox’s own default materials (Plastic/Wood/Brick/etc) show up blurry / low quality too, like they’re not loading their full res textures. Seems related to the same underlying issue.
  • During a 2 client test, each client’s console shows a completely different set of assets loading/unloading/failing. It’s not the same assets breaking for both players, each one has its own independent mix.

Example of the blurry default materials I mentioned:

This issue cannot be consistently reproduced, it was happening for a few days then went away for a week and then came back today. Each play test session is different, one session might only fail to load a few assets and the next might fail to load almost everything.

Stuff I’ve already tried:

  • Cleared studio’s local asset cache (rbx-storage, rbx-storage-sc, rbx-storage.db*, shadercachevk.bin) - didn’t help.
  • Updated GPU drivers - didn’t help.
  • Fully uninstalled/reinstalled studio, including clearing out old version folders in AppData\Local\Roblox\Versions - didn’t help.
  • Not running any VPN/proxy/firewall or antivirus doing HTTPS interception, just a normal home connection.

System Information:

  • NVIDIA 3070 TI
  • Intel i7 - 12700K
  • 32GB DDR5

Experiencing the exact issue right now, or actually for the past few weeks already.

A few weeks ago it was fixed by restarting studio and behaved more like a memory leak issue (it got worse with every playtest).

Right now it’s at a point where I am unable to work at all due to nothing loading..

Have you tried switching to Vulkan graphics mode? It seems to lower the amount of assets that fail for me. I’m wondering if it helps for other people with this issue.

Sorry for the delay
I did try it and it seemed to improve it for a few minutes before breaking completly again.

I’ve been gone for the past week, now going back into studio today I have yet to encounter the problem again.

Has this been fixed in general or are you still facing the same issues?

Still facing the same issue. It stopped for a few days then came back again yesterday. It comes and goes randomly.

I wish staff would say something regarding this issue since it completely stops my ability to work when this happens.

Here to say I am experiencing this issue as well

Alright but there seems to be a pattern.
It was gone for us until yesterday aswell, since yesterday me and my devs are starting to get these issues again. Before that as mentioned nothing.

Hi Vital, SeRelCaoss, SifuSulli - can you all try logging out and back in on Studio per Error 429 Halting Ability To Develop - #3 by TheBobo88 to see if this mitigates the issue? We’re still investigating on our end.

It does seem like this is multiple issues compounding. The unloading may be related to Assets failing to load in multiple games - #14 by 1Zozima

Thank you.

I had the issue happen to me again about an hour ago, and I did as you suggested. I logged out of studio and then logged back in, and I haven’t had any errors show up since.

Assuming this wasn’t a coincidence and logging out and back in truly fixed the issue, is this a temporary solution and should I expect the issue to return eventually?

Thanks Vital! This is a temporary solution to mitigate the issue from your end. We’re still investigating internally, and your validation that a logout/back in fixed it for you will help with our investigation.

Please post back here if you see the issue again.
