I need a game idea for a new dev

Hey there, I wanted to really get into developing Roblox games and I aim to make a somewhat popular game. However, the issue is that I cannot find any game ideas that would attract even a couple players. For example, I was thinking to do an obby game but I feel that they’re quite irrelevant now.. if that makes sense.

Nonetheless, I still went forward with the idea of producing an obby game and to no one’s surprise, it flopped with about 35 visits now. I was still motivated at the time of publishing the obby game and therefore went ahead to make another game. The game was a guess the FNaF character game which also flopped terribly with a measly 19 visits. After that, I never touched Roblox Studio due to my lack of motivation..

Therefore, I am here today to attempt a positive return to Roblox Studio? Yeah, I hope it works out I guess but I just wanted some valuable game ideas that I could take and create as a solo developer.

Anyways, thank you if you did read all of that.

If you’re a new developer you shouldn’t expect a popular game right off the bat. You could come up with games you develop for the single purpose of learning and getting better at coding, etc. After a while I’d recommend trying to make an official game, ready to publish. But it is important to learn how to develop good, quality games with good and optimized code, optimized models and a fun, unique, game idea.

First off, if youre new you shouldnt worry about visits. You should worry more abt learning right now, so make some games that will challenge you, and help you learn, but also something fun for you to work on.

For me it was speed simulator, then a clicker simulator. These games helped me learn remote events, for loops, and proper organization (my clicker game gives me an aneurysm js looking at how unorganized it was).

So, i would suggest making a simple simulator or smth just to learn a little. Maybe make a simple tycoon or another obby with a specific mechanic you think you can make, but still learn from.

My first games had 12 and 20 visits. Then i got 120, then 150, then i spammed advertisements and still only got 840. So, dw abt that stuff.

@PastyFatMan is knowledgeable in this subject but regardless I will add some input to this thread that I think might be helpful.

One repetition. Two repetitions. Three repetitions. Four repetitions. Five repetitions. The more repetitive work you can do the better. Many developers fall short when it comes to doing repetitive work because they get bored and would rather be doing something else. I think if you are truly good at repetitive work you can make a game like the find the objects games or even just an obby with 100’s of unique photos throughout the obby. That is where people will experience the time you put into it. If your more advanced than this and can make your own designs without using photos, that’s even better. Otherwise just something simple with a lot of variety to it could be really nice and again the more repetitive work you can do allows you to make the game feel special compared to counterparts that feel more rushed.

Thanks for the response, Alex!

I want to ask, what style of game would you recommend me to create in order to improve my skills?

This makes a lot of sense, thank you so much!

To be honest, anything you find interesting. Something I did a lot was try to recreate already existing games like street fighter, mario party, etc. By doing that you can learn lots of diverse stuff like setting up a round system, storing statistics for players, making party systems and more.
Something else you could do is just practice making different types of features, not a whole game. You could practice making party, inventory or round systems without making a whole game to complement it.
Also, optimizing and modularizing code is very important, so if you don’t know how already, I’d suggest looking into how module scripts work.

Okay, thank you so much! I might just make another random obby but try to create some of the features you mentioned inside of the obby if that makes sense lol.

Not sure if you’ll see this, but I wanted to ask what type of obby should I make? I’m completely out of themes to go off of for the obby. Thank you!

You could try making a competetive obby. 2 Players race against each other to reach the end. The obbies could be randomized!
