I think that my game is about to be stolen

Hello, devforum.

I don’t know where else to put this or who I would contact about this. I made a game recently. Before it became successful, I stupidly transferred my group to a friend so that he could add the game to his profile. Now I don’t think he’s going to give it back. He blocked me and all of my friends on Discord and said, “pixels im sorry for what im about to do i dont expect you to forgive me.” The game has over 1M Robux in pending Creator Rewards.

Frankly, I’m panicking and I’m terrified (so sorry if this post is scatterbrained). This isn’t a straightforward case of account theft, it’s something much more difficult. And I’m terrified of going through the legal system, and I don’t even know if I’d recover more money than it would cost.

I have my revenue split for now, but I’m afraid he’s trying to sell the game. I really don’t know what to do. Please, if you have any advice, tell me. Thank you.

sharing your game to anyone at all is a little bit questionable…

but you dont have to go “through the legal system”

you can submit a DMCA request to roblox for them to take down the game, but you have to consider that you are legally required to provide legal information, such as your legal name, address, etc. which incredibly limits what individuals can really do

i know it is, it was my mistake. with a dmca the game would just be gone, no? i want it back, not gone. it’s not a clone or a reupload, it’s the original.

DMCA would have the copies of your game taken down from Roblox, but the people would still have the copy and reupload it, requiring further DMCAs unless roblox is good at stopping them

probably best thing you can do is update your game and improve it so their copies become worse in a sense

it’s not a copy, it’s the original. he has my group.

It’s not a legal issue because she willingly gave him the group without a contract. Please learn the law before you recommend people take legal action.

I’m going to be brutally honest. You voluntarily gave away your group, with in mind the possibility of you never getting it back, but you had trust in your friend and unfortunately they betrayed that. ROBLOX hardly assist hacked developers who lost their group by force so to think they will assist you in this circumstance where you made a willfully stupid decision is very unlikely. I know you don’t want to hear this, but you will probably never regain your group.

i have dms proving he was only meant to have the group temporarily, surely that’s a verbal contract

If you didn’t explicitly state it was a gift it is considered theft (in most places). I also can’t imagine him saying he was sorry and all that before he cut contact would help his case.

Even with this in mind though there unfortunately probably isn’t much that can be done. It’s extremely unlikely you manage to even bring this to court unless you already know the persons identity in real life, even then suing for virtual assets is kinda a grey zone and hard to do at the moment.

If I was in your shoes I would just not leave him alone honestly. It probably won’t work but there isn’t anything that even has a shot at getting you the game back otherwise. Make alternate accounts to dm him, see if you can tell his family members about what he’s done, just try your hardest to not let a day go by without him feeling guilty and ashamed. He already seemed to feel some form of guilt over stealing it so maybe you are able to get him to cave and give it back. It’s unlikely it’ll happen but without anything else to try I feel like it can’t hurt.

Edit: I’m also seeing you still have developer in the group, if you have access to the team create you could do a number of things. Teleport players on join to a version of the game you own, put a big warning about it being stolen, probably more.

learn the law before speaking about it.
Theft is illegal (shocking! :exploding_head::astonished_face:). That means that ASSUMING this guy didn’t just give it off all nilly and he had proper contract info, then it’s absolutely a legal case.

She literally stated all she has is dms with the guy. So again, this is not a legal issue as there was no legally binding agreement before transfer of group ownership. End of the discussion.

surely it is, if i said “yea sure you can borrow my car for the afternoon”, handed over the keys, and the person kept the car that would be a legal matter
