Incorrect Key Mapping on QWERTZ Keyboard

For the past week, I have been having issues with keybinds in games & Roblox’s preset ones. I have not been able to chat properly, or open my backpack.

( This section has been removed in favor of update 10/09/2025 )

My regional formatting for dates and times is set to USA.
I am using Windows 11 Home 24H2
I am using QWERTZ, and my computer layout is German.
I have a mechanical Razer BlackWidow V4, which isn’t the issue as the chat is recognizing that # is the hashtag key when being clicked on.

The issue is reproduceable a lot, however the issue is sometimes not present. I am unsure of the conditions as to when this happens. I have attempted a complete reinstall of Roblox, however it remains random. The # and - keybinds work as intended in Roblox Studio, opening chat and toggling UI selection.

UPDATE 10/09/2025
Since I opened this report originally, I have made a bunch more discoveries throughout the weeks. This issue does not seem limited to just CoreGUI, but any input engine-wide (excluding typing).

I hereby am renaming the bug report, and including all of my new findings within this update.

It appears that the keyboard mapping is not supposed change regardless of which keyboard layout is being used. So whatever the issue is appears to be changing the mapping of the keycodes, to no longer be what it used to be.

I can confirm also it is not just CAS (ContextActionService) or UIS (UserInputService), but it seems to be engine level! Here are my tests I have done with the issue present and the issue not present:

Broken Mapping

Note: “Minus” may appear correct in the video, but the correct output should be “Slash”.

BackQuote turns into BackSlash
Slash turns into Minus
BackSlash turns into Slash
Ö turns into BackQuote
Z stays as Z (Incorrect, it should be Y for compatibility
Y stays as Y (Incorrect, ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^)

Working Mapping

( Don’t mind the Cities: Skylines 2 in the background )

Expected behavior

- and / should open the chat, not do nothing.
# should toggle UI selection, not open the chat.
^/° should open my inventory/backpack, not toggle UI selection.

I have the same issue - I can’t open the chat with the keybind. Czech QWERTZ keyboard layout.

It looks like the regression was associated with a flagged change that was flipped in production then reverted after we received a different devforum report, please let us know if the issue is still occurring for you

Hey, the issue with Keybinds and typing are 2 different issues!

Are you saying the keybinding issue is still occurring for you and the other does not occur or vice versa?

I have not been able to encounter this issue specifically today, however it was still present after the other issue was resolved. Sorry for not being able to say that much to it, I am not sure how the issue happens, but it seems to be a bit more rare now or completely fixed.

UPDATE 9/22/2025 (691)
As of today, I am able to confirm that this issue is still ongoing. I’ve just encountered it within Jailbreak.

UPDATE 10/06/2025 (693)
Issue occurred once more, very consistently

UPDATE 10/09/2025
I have updated the original post with all of my new findings, and a bit more detail.
(If this could be moved to Engine Bugs, that would be great!)

UPDATE 12/05/2025 (701)
Issue is still present in 701

Thanks for the detailed report and testing! We’ve identified the root cause and will release a fix soon to make sure we always follow QWERTY keyboard layout.

Hi, thank you for the acknowledgement! (it still is an issue :sob:)

I am a bit confused what you mean by following the QWERTY keyboard layout?

To clarify, Roblox keybindings are going to be based on physical key positions, not the characters your keyboard prints. For example, the chat keybind is the key in the position where / sits on a US QWERTY keyboard — on a German QWERTZ keyboard, that’s the - key. This means WASD movement and all other keybinds work in the same physical positions regardless of your keyboard layout, which should fix your issue.
Let us know if you have more questions.
