Increase in character desync related bugs

Hello! For the last few months we’ve been receiving bug reports from users experiencing large desyncs that completely break the core experience of Fish It. This is mostly visible from player positions failing to replicate and some characters being stuck/endlessly walking in place from other peoples perspectives.

Attached is a first person perspective of this bug happening to me. No services had interacted with my character other than welding basic gear to my character, player spawns are controlled via Roblox’s SpawnLocation instances. I had only walked from my initial spawn (a few studs away) to the docks before trying to fish. In the video you can see my attempts to fish immediately fail. To quickly debug, I equipped a placeable totem (this uses my characters HumanoidRootPart position on the server) and watched it be placed in the exact place I spawned.

My perspective:

Another users perspective with the same issue:

Video of a user desyncing and resyncing after using a boat:

Pictures of users syncing and desyncing from interacting with boats (these have have their network ownership reassigned based on whether they are occupied or not)

It usually takes multiple respawns for the players position to finally correct even though every single teleport is managed by the server. Some of the videos shown are before we even introduced an anti-cheat, and, with it fully disabled (as a hail marry to try solving the issue).

Similar reporting I spotted on X:

Unfortunately I have heard very little about other games experiencing these problems. I am inclined to believe that it only happens with streaming across very large worlds based on the games I have observed it in. Additionally it is very hard to reproduce even when I visibly spot players in my servers suffering from this desync.

Hi, I wonder if you can tell when this issue start to happen? I am trying to see if it’s aligned with Upcoming Improvements to Physics Replication ?

We do use the default configuration of this mode but it’s been happening for many months (though less severe), much before that feature release in June.

hmm, I see…

So ImprovedPhysicsReplication is known to have caused some similar issues that make avatar desync and we do have fixes being worked on. Feel free to disable it so that you are rolled back to the “less severe” version. However, at this point, we are focusing on improving ImprovedPhysicsReplication rather than fixing the old version.

Though please keep in mind that the “disabled” option will be eventually removed once we confirmed all bugs are fixed, so I would prefer to leave it on unless we really need to disable it (I am not sure how severe it is with your game, so your call  ) If you disable it, please be prepared that we’ll ask folks to try turning it on again for their games.
