Input on My Game Idea

Maybe you’ve seen me post about this game before, but I had started developing a singe-player, hyper-casual game similar to Crossy Road or Frogger. When I posted that I was hiring a programmer, I got some negative feedback from developer saying that single-player games like these don’t do too well - and I agree. So, I’ve done some thinking and I want your opinion on which of these two gameplay types would work the best for this game:

Don't know what Crossy Road is?

Some details about Crossy Road if you haven’t played:

As suggested by the name, you pick a character (normally an animal) to play as and you have to cross lanes of traffic, rivers, and train tracks without falling into the water or being hit by a train or truck. You gain coins from picking them up or getting them from daily gifts and can buy a crate which gives you a random skin. There are other little things to make the game more addictive, but by-and-large that’s how it works.

Option 1:

I create my game (Bloxxy Road) like Crossy Road - a single-player game where the player collects skins to use and tries to beat their highscore. There would likely be a global game of the day where one randomized map is created and players try to get the highest world-wide score for the day. Winning gives a skin and coins.

Option 2:

I revise the gameplay to make this game multi-player. Since single-player games aren’t as successful, I would make my version more like TypicalType’s Lane Jumping in Epic Minigames. A group of 10-ish players “cross the road” together in the skins they choose (skin collection remains the same). They compete against each other each round and you get a certain amount of coins - dependant on where you place for that round.

Since it isn’t hard to die in this game, rounds won’t take more than 2 minutes and there are a lot more options with this. There can be pro servers, win leaderboards, competitive seasons, badges and skins for reaching certain amounts of wins.

I’m interested in hearing your thoughts and suggestions for each of the two - which ones interests you more, objectively which one would do better, etc.

I like the second option much better, but I think you should build off of that. Instead of having it be competitive, you should have it be based on teamwork. The players could work together to cross the road (having to step on multiple pressure plates to move a blocked car, etc.), and everyone who survives and wins could move on to the next round.

Either way this game sounds great, and with enough time and effort put into it I can tell it will be a success. Good luck!

I think the best way to go would be to build a multiplayer mode off of the singleplayer mode. I’ve found the biggest feature request these types of games have in common is (ta-da) a multiplayer game mode.

I’d say you could implement both overtime, if it’s not too much hassle for what you’re aiming for.
This because there’ll be people who would prefer playing in single player mode and others who will prefer multiplayer.
Or, as another frequent case (this is what I do depending on the game, if it’s possible to), players could hop on single player if they want to try the game out and get the hang of it without competing first, and then move to multiplayer when they feel secure enough.
