Introducing Enhanced Protection: Professional-Grade Security for Creators

Hi Creators,

Today, we are introducing Enhanced Protection, the most secure version of 2-Step Verification (2SV) designed to eliminate “point-of-authentication” attacks like phishing and credential stuffing. We recommend enrollment for any user seeking maximum security, such as top creators and high Robux holders.

Why Enhanced Protection?

Standard 2-step verification (2SV), such as email or authenticator app codes, is a great first step at securing your Roblox account. When an account has enabled a 2SV, Roblox will add an additional challenge during sign-in and when a risky action (e.g., changing a credential, making a group payout) is being attempted on this account. However, this cannot protect your account against attackers who phish for codes used in a standard 2SV. Enhanced Protection moves beyond security codes by mandating phishing-resistant methods (i.e., passkeys, security keys) for sign-in and post sign-in challenge.

What does Enhanced Protection do?

When you enable Enhanced Protection, your account security transitions to a higher standard of security. This changes how your current login & 2SV methods work:

Method Change Under Enhanced Protection
Passkeys Passkeys become your primary method for signing into Roblox and solving 2SV challenges
Hardware Security Keys Existing hardware security keys (like Yubikeys) remain active for sign-in and 2SV challenges on supported platforms. New hardware security keys can be registered as passkeys in Settings > Account Info > Login Methods.
Email One-Time Passcodes (OTP) Traditional email OTP are disabled for 2SV challenges. If email OTP is used for sign-in, you will need to solve a passkey or hardware security key challenge.
Authenticator Apps Codes 6-digit codes from apps (like Google Authenticator) are disabled for 2SV challenges
Passwords If passwords are used for sign-in, you will need to solve a passkey or hardware security key challenge.

Turn on Enhanced Protection

You can turn on Enhanced Protection directly in your account settings.

  1. Log into your account and navigate to Settings.
  2. Select the Security tab.
  3. Locate the Enhanced Protection section to begin the process.

Before turning on Enhanced Protection, you must first:

  1. Add at least 1 passkey to your account

    • You can use a device-bound passkey or a hardware security key registered
  2. Add a verified Email

Then you must also:

  1. Add a verified phone number OR
  2. Save backup codes

We require a verified email alongside a phone number or backup code because passkeys can be lost or damaged. When that happens, we want to make sure you can still pass two distinct challenges to securely regain access, in accordance with our new policy. For more information on Enhanced Protection, please visit our Help Center.

Thank you.

FAQs

Why do I need to add a phone number to turn on Enhanced Protection?

  • We do not mandate a verified phone number. To turn on Enhanced Protection, you can choose to add a phone number or save a set of backup codes. We require this to make sure that you have ways to recover your account if you lose your passkeys.

As a reminder, accounts with Enhanced Protection are considered 2SV-enabled accounts that require passkeys (device-bound or hardware security keys) for solving 2SV challenges. Our new security policy requires a user to solve two distinct challenges to recover a 2SV-enabled account.

How do I add additional passkeys to protect my account?

  • To add additional passkeys:
    1. Log into your account and navigate to Settings
    2. Select the Account Info tab
    3. Locate Login Methods and click Manage
    4. Click Add Passkey.
You can add a device-bound passkey or an external hardware security.

The when they brought up Passkeys. Other than asking me to generate it, I don’t think it ever says what to do if you lose it or how to not lose it, or what it is and how to export and print it out from a printer.

AMAZING good job! Best update this decade??? Theres alot of phishing on Discord right now and a lot of people are falling for it so this is great. Cookie stealing has been an issue for so long now, glad its being addressed.

Just need a way to let devs know that this feature exists, I think adding a little banner in studio would be good, I’ve seen it used before.

I absolutely love passkeys as a security feature, and I’m a huge advocate for them to begin with. Seeing it introduced and locked down like this is a great option for account security measures for sure, and it’s great that it can not only be used with accounts and devices tied to you but also password managers as well. A big win for security!

Thank you Roblox’s security team and everyone involved!

Will you be able to log into Roblox Studio with Enhanced Protection enabled? As far as I know, only one-time codes such as from an email or authenticator app are currently supported

I really love passkeys they make the login process easier while protecting my account!! Having to get a 2fa code each time usually feels inconvenient

We are adding passkey support on Roblox Studio as well. In the meantime, you may use Quick Sign-in in the mean time.

For any apps that aren’t compatible with EP (eg Roblox Studio, VR, etc.), you’ll be asked to use the Quick Sign-in feature:

Overall, really glad with the introduction of Enhanced Protection! With phishing becoming more and more sophisticated, even 2FA codes don’t make me really feel confident of my account security (OTP obviously doesn’t know if you’re using the real Roblox website or not)

So far EP has worked well in daily usage, definitely look into this if you have high-value assets!

This Enhanced Protection feature for Roblox accounts is basically having Lockdown Mode added in iOS, iPadOS, watchOS, and MacOS. I’m not gonna lie, this security feature is probably the best feature we could ever have. Great job, Roblox!

In case I lose access to my passkey, can I still get in? Can we go more in detail what exactly is disabled on login?

Just wondering why? Isn’t that one of the most secure methods? Personally I use it on my iPhone, which is not only physical but locked down therefore if someone ever manages to actually get access to that then I do not think I could ever be safe :sob:

Very happy about this by the way, just needing clarification.

Also… if anyone is thinking about turning Enhanced Protection off… here’s my official recommendation.

Jokes aside, this feature is absolutely important for account security. Please don’t disable this unless you fully understand the risks.

They have mentioned why in the post

The key of Enhanced Protection is that it only allows phishing-resistant 2FA methods! Phishing is for example when a fake website asks for your login & 2FA code, and uses that to secretly log in to your account and steal assets of value.

Those 6-digit codes are good at making it much harder for attackers to get into your account by guessing passwords, but they don’t protect you if you accidentally log in on a malicious website yourself.

What makes passkeys and hardware keys (like Yubikey) awesome is that they check if you’re on the correct domain before they tell the website it’s you who’s logging in. Are you on roblo.com instead of roblox.com? It will refuse to log in!

This is a great step froward but, there can be more to further protect all developers. Some cases had auth completely bypasses. If someone has access to your pc remotely, its harder to protect against that. Forcing mobile auth for every group or robux related action would help a lot more. It should act as a “3 step” auth. Not only would you need your normal auth code, but authorization via mobile.

Also it appears some things aren’t finished?

Also, adding passkey to iPhone doesn’t work after scanning but this issue could be just at apple’s side.

Not working on mobile either.

I have a password, back-up codes, and an authenticator. Been like this since '21. I’ve been good to go for a solid 5 years.

Can you make a version of this for groups? Turn on a setting to force developers to have enhanced settings on before getting access to edit places.
