Introducing Verification Level for Communities

Hi Creators,

Today, we’re introducing a new tool to help you build safer, more secure communities: Verification Level. This is part of our ongoing commitment to giving you the tools you need to manage and grow your communities with confidence.

This new feature allows Community Owners to set a verification requirement for new members before they can join. By requiring members to verify their Roblox accounts, you can:

  • Reduce the number of unverified accounts, which are often associated with bots and bad actors.
  • Ensure moderators spend less time dealing with spam and more time focusing on engaging your members.
  • Foster a more authentic and trustworthy community for your dedicated users.

You can find these new settings under Community Settings > Join Requirements and select from four simple levels to control how users join.

  • None (Default): No account verification is required.
  • Low: Users must be phone, email, or ID verified.
  • Medium: Users must be ID verified, or have both phone and email verified.
  • High: Users must be ID verified.

All existing Communities will automatically be set to None, but you can easily adjust this at any time to best fit your community’s needs.

Account verification helps create trust by ensuring your members meet your desired standards. However, higher verification requirements may affect how quickly your Community grows. We encourage Community Owners to find the right balance and configure settings according to their needs.

If a user tries to join and doesn’t meet your requirements, they’ll be prompted to complete the necessary verification steps, similar to how it works when joining an experience with specific requirements.

This feature was built with your requests in mind—thank you! Please continue to share your feedback with us.

FAQs

What happens to existing Community members if I enable verification levels?

  • Nothing changes for current members. Verification levels only apply to new users joining your Community. Adjusting these settings will not affect any members who are already in your Communities.

How do Verification Levels work with Manual Approval enabled?

  • When Manual Approval is enabled alongside a Verification Level, users must meet your selected verification criteria before they can submit a join request. However, changing your Verification Level will not affect any existing join requests already waiting for approval.

This is a wonderful feature, please enable it for games as well so we can prevent exploiters, bots and alts from joining to a degree.

Nice feature - this should include connections and experiences as well! Is this something that’s being worked on for them as well?

With so many better methods of securing our accounts, why is phone number verification still being used despite issues like SIM swapping? I’m sure I’m not the only person who doesn’t want to tie a phone number to my account when I have already protected my account with other means of protection such as 2FA.

I agree, having a feature like that for games as well would be awesome. Maybe also allowing to set account age limit on the game it self without having a script would also be very nice.

(As it stops people from joining then to just dislike the game)

i’m presuming it’s because any form of two factor verification is better than nothing at all.

TOTP-based authentication is already available, and as you can turn off phone number verification i see nothing wrong with keeping it on the platform as an additional security/verification step.

edit: it also makes it a lot harder for alt accounts to exist - hence this new feature existing

This is very VERY useful for people who host 17+ games on their communities.

P.s. Age requirement for communities when? Would be really handy for me, since I want to host a 13+ Roblox Community because of the Guilded integration with forums.

This is an excellent feature, and a step in the right direction! I wonder, could we ever expect to see this verification level concept introduced to other permissions besides just joining the community? For example, lower-level verification users are permitted to join the community, but cannot send messages on the wall.

Finally ROBLOX is doing upgrades on Groups or if you wanna call it ‘Communities’

Was getting sick and tired of Bots spamming the Group Wall

Accounts exclusively verified by email should be in the “None” category.
This logic should also propagate to the “Medium” category.

Email verification isn’t verification.

Agreed, with AI making and “verifying” accounts by email is nothing.

This is a quite useful update. Especially if you’re trying to not have bots in your communities. Roblox has made it a lot easier to manage! :happy3:

While this is a nice feature, please give us more flexibility for these options (give us checkboxes and grouping options rather than pre-set radial options) AND include an option to force require a user to have 2FA protection on their account.
This is ESSENTIAL for groups that manage access to a studio place, we MUST be able to ensure anyone who can access the game via the group has 2FA so their account being compromised is not a risk factor.

I really would like to see this integrated into permissions for communities and experiences, most especially as an API we can use for in-experience content, i.e. users who aren’t verified will not be allowed to partake in leaderboard-connected activities like races to prevent exploiters ruining the leaderboards.

I strongly disagree, many may not have or want to verify with their ID or phone number, and I am much more comfortable to trust that a user atleast cares about their account to SOME extent that they verified an email address on it.
Perhaps to improve email verification roblox could require intermittent verification tests to combat temporary and throwaway emails.

instressing update come with news what is happening with videos games age verification.

Side note does this mean we will see 18+ group now since high is pretty much that?

We need an Option to only let users in that are ID verified or Phone Number verified. It’s not that hard to make automatic emails for your bots,

This is a good update! It is a good way to combat bots. This should also be added to the process of joining games. It could improve security and make sure bot accounts or spam/unwanted users can’t join.

For this you can select the Medium Verification Level. Medium requires either ID verification or phone + email.

Roblox are adding filters for group walls so that will be a more successful preventative method with less impact on genuine users who simply don’t verify with ID or phone number for whatever reason.

I fully agree that these should be options for experiences, however I do worry about experiences locking out many players who don’t want to link their phone number or ID with their Roblox account (there are many valid reasons not to).

I unfortunately could not use that much verification, as most of my players are not email or phone number verified, as most of my players are very small children most likely on their parent’s device. Same thing with my group. But for games with a older player base, this could be quite useful.
