Is Gambling illegal for your roblox game?

Hello, I’m making a RP game sort (just a town to have fun and hangout) and I just thought it’d be cool if there was like an ingame lottery and what were the rules and stuff for that if there are any, if you can point me in the right direction I would very much appreciate it…I already know it’d not possible in the Chinese rules, let me know
Thanks, ENTMT

It’s not illegal but please be mindful about how you set it up! Here’s a post I commonly reference:

In addition, as pointed out in the post above, there are lots of threads with answers that you can search out. Every thread effectively has an answer to this question save for a few misinformative posts. The common denominator between these posts is: no Robux involvement, directly or indirectly, with any system or system linked to it (including currency).

with all do respect I saw what you said in that post but you are not an admin or anything…do you think you can give me the source to where you got that information?

As long as there is no robux gambling involved then it is okay to make a gambling game

do you happen to have a source like an official rule book or and admin who said that?

Sure! I’m glad that you’re looking to have my points double checked because I am indeed not staff and therefore can’t give an authoritative answer. My response is based off of developers who have prior faced this incident, staff responses/announcements and interpretation of the rules.

Section 1 Rule 11:
Activities or actions that are dangerous to others, unethical or illegal or that violate any local, national or international laws or regulations. Not only do we not allow these activities, we do not allow anyone discussing them or encouraging others to discuss (or take) such actions, including:

  • Gambling with Robux or real money;

Roblox Community Rules. Accessed 08 May 2021.

As Robux can be bought with real money, they are one in the same. Therefore you cannot link Robux to any system involved with gambling directly or indirectly. You should be familiar with the scenario of financial losses in gambling. Games that gamble with items that have Robux value can result in loss of Robux and as such, real money. Purely in-game currency can be granted or removed at free will at no cost to the user, therefore this is good.

Another circumstance is loot boxes. While it isn’t explicitly gambling (this is debatable), because you are always guaranteed to win an item you can’t lose your Robux (and therefore real money) on these systems. That’s why instead the rules are “full percentage disclosure” instead of “no Robux allowed at all”. Check out Guidelines around users paying for random virtual items.

Lastly is a testimony from a top developer, Widgeon, who formerly had Robux indirectly involved with slot machines at The Plaza. Testimony here. The long and short of it is: Widgeon was asked to remove Robux involvement with slot machines. The Plaza is still up and running with slot machines, however because Robux isn’t involved it may stay up.

Hope that helps for context. Feel free to message DevRelations or the Customer Support Team if you need more concrete clarification here. They may redirect you back to the DevForum for more information though.

Hello and thankyou for taking your time to help me, firstly this was very good information but I’m still a bit confused secondly last time I messaged Roblox about that kind of stuff they said they are not able to pre determine if I would get banned or not thirdly,

I think I know what you mean, so in widgeons case since PP (Plaza Points) could be purchased with Robux and then it was able to be gambled it was wasn’t allowed, so say that you can work a job in game or just get paid for playing the game and/or finding gold around the map and then you are able to spend it at a casino that would be ok as long as it is not connected to robux in anyway?

sorry for another question and thankyou if you answer

Not surprised about the response you got from contacting Roblox. The general statement around gambling is in the Community Rules but context is important so they can’t predetermine if what you’re doing is allowed. This is why they direct you to the forum for help assessing your specific circumstances.

For your second question, you got it right. You can complete in-game tasks or find currency around the map and use that on casino machines. Ultimately this does mean that you cannot make the currency purchasable either directly or with a secondary currency (e.g. if Cash is a currency that can be used on casino machines, then you cannot exchange Robux → Cash or Robux → Gems → Cash).

My advice around handling casino currency is making it a completely separate currency that you can give alongside daily rewards or special task completion. You might choose to handle it differently and that’s fine. Just so long as no Robux is there!

There’s a bit of a gray area though when it comes to game passes. I don’t know if you’re willing to entertain it but currency booster game passes seem to be allowed since it can’t actually result in the loss of currency. The passive effect is always active with the pass owned, it only affects how much you can collect. I do not have good substantiation here so it might be something you want to avoid.

Ok thankyou so much I think I understand so basically make currency only inheritable through in game task and what not and gamepasses would be allowed be the gamepass says what it will give you (e.x. Higher Paying Job) and since that is not associated with the casino and doesnt promise casino advantages it would be ok, and things like 2x better chance at casino gamepass would not be ok?
