Is making a custom chat system going to be against Roblox TOS?

I saw a video recently following a simple theme: making a custom chat system for my roleplay game. The problem was that, since Roblox was releasing the age division rules, their game would be very limited in the communication department.

The rest of the video follows them making their custom chat system. They correctly add Roblox’s censor system, but this will allow users across any age group to communicate. Is this action against, or following the current/future Roblox TOS?

The video I am referencing: “Roblox removed chat, so I remade it”

Alright thank you for your reply, I have informed myself on the shared post. I understand now that creators can read messages from all age groups but are still limited when using the chat function to communicate. I understand somewhat what this all means, but the second post is still a bit blurry for me, could you be so kind as to elaborate on such topic. Thank you!

Not in principle but it cannot bypass restrictions

I love your response. But it raises a few questions of mine. How could a user, a developer follow such restrictions? Will they need to divide the users themselves or do you think Roblox will launch a new API? I would love to hear your thoughts on this.

I think they’ve already launched stuff to help people with custom chat systems comply

I’m no programmer so I can’t really speak for this to any meaningful extent

As of my knowledge, I know most text related APIs they have launched but so far there is no age group detection API due to privacy laws like COPPA. However, developers can use built-in services to check a user’s age group (e.g., under 13 vs. 13+) to ensure age-appropriate experiences. So I do get your point! Thanks.

Follow information on this page:
https://create.roblox.com/docs/chat/guidelines

In short, most existing systems aren’t allowed as all chat systems (defined on the page as well) need to follow a bunch of criteria. That includes safety checks, but also specific systems/features.

If you follow the page above, you should be fine. The only real way to know is for staff to outright say it’s not allowed, which I haven’t seen, or people get their systems taken down by “misusing Roblox systems.”

Thank you! I will be checking this thoroughly. I appreciate your response.

Both of these quotes address safe-chat systems. However, they don’t address full custom chat systems, which are not the same as safe-chat.

The key difference is that a full custom chat system would use the text filtering API, while safe-chat would not be filtered.

in conclusion: roblox doesn’t know how to explain things

No. Making your own chat isn’t against the rules as long as you obey by them. You can use TextChatService to check if users can chat with one another.

Alright thanks. I appreciate your response, I got the information I needed. Thank you and all of the people who replying with the hope of helping me. Have a good one!

Right, no worries. I’d suggest changing the category of the post to Help and Feedback > Game Design Support and then marking any of our posts (which you find best suits your needs) as the solution. It is done to ensure the post doesn’t get taken down and so future users know which post helped you.

Making your own chat without obeying THESE rules will be counted as Misusing Roblox Systems Community Standard

as mentioned by @redirect →

There are a lot of features that you should be aware of. Simple CanUsersDirectChatAsync calls won’t be enough.
Gosh, few years ago I thought Roblox couldn’t get much worse, but here we are.
