Is this to much? - VFX

Hello, I’m a solo dev working on a game about planets and stuff. As a solo dev it probably don’t come at a surprise that I mainly script, and suck at everything else. For the moment am I doing the vfx for a neutron star in my game (if you don’t know what that is, it’s a dense spinning ball). I’m not experienced at all - only done like 2 vfx’s before - but I manage to do something that I’m proud of.

My question is - as in the title - if my vfx in the video below is “to much”, also what i can do to make it better.

All feedback is appreciated, thanks in advance!

Hello, Much like you I am also mainly a scripter who makes a little VFX occasionally, and i happened to also make a neutron star looking vfx object a while ago.
I do not think its too much at all, it looks like a great amount of VFX at the moment, and the limit in my opinion really depends on performance and how organized you’re trying to be so you can test that yourself

But if you’re looking for suggestions, a few things I would do are:

I would make it less dark especially near the center a neutron star is bursting with very bright energy. Using some glow and some smaller effects near the center that are very bright could look good

I would add some more debris shooting out from the center at high speed

Another small suggestion is having a nicer background can make it look many times better, It may not be possible, but if your game revolves around the VFX, it might be a good idea to make lighting and a world that compliments the VFX.

Again though I would not consider myself anywhere near professional or amazing at VFX so take these with a grain of salt.

Thanks for your reply! I will try to implement your tips to my neutron star when I get the opportunity.

So it has been two days and I kinda forgot about this, until now! I scrapped nearly the entirely VFX and made a MUCH cleaner one. Here it is:

As you can see I’ve also made some black holes since last time.

Thanks for your advice again, it really helped!
